The Fanconi Cancer Foundation, in collaboration with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), is excited to fund Dr. Meng Wang’s research through the 2024 FCF-AACR NextGen Grant for Transformative Cancer Research. Dr. Wang is exploring how nutritional and metabolic pathways can be leveraged to reduce cancer risk in people with Fanconi anemia (FA). A new era in #FanconiAnemia bone marrow failure treatment has been underway for years, thanks to the promise of gene therapy. Research funded by Rocket Pharmaceuticals, led by Drs. Paula Rio, Julián Sevilla, and Juan A. Bueren, has shown that FA patients' bone marrow can successfully accept corrected cells—a process known as engraftment—leading to lasting improvements in blood counts. Even more promising, this approach doesn’t require chemotherapy, avoiding many of the harsh side effects of traditional transplants. This trial brings us closer to a future where people with FA can receive safer and more effective treatment, minimizing long-term risks like cancer. The strides made here represent monumental hope for the FA community and the future of treatment options. 2024 was the year we became the Fanconi Cancer Foundation and doubled down on our mission to improve the lives of people with #FanconiAnemia and associated cancers. What all did we accomplish together in 2024? From cancer prevention trials and progress in safer transplants, to unifying vital data and advancing gene therapy and gene editing research, 2024 has been a year of big progress and collaboration. But our work goes beyond research. We continue to support the FA community through our long-standing traditions like the FA Family Retreat, while stepping up our efforts in advocacy and expanding support programs for patients and caregivers.
