How do you rebuild when cooperation stops? For years, regions along the EU’s eastern border - 🇫🇮 Finland, 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, and 🇵🇱 Poland - shared close ties with their 🇷🇺 Russian and 🇧🇾 Belarusian neighbours. Trade, tourism, and cultural exchange were part of daily life, supported by Interreg. But in 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine changed everything: 🚧 Borders closed 🤝 Partnerships dissolved 🏙️ Communities had to rethink their future The EU acted swiftly: 💶 €150 million reallocated 🔗 New connections forged within the EU 📈 Economies shifting and adapting The Interreg Programmes Central Baltic Programme, Interreg South Baltic Programme , Interreg Aurora, Interreg Lithuania-Poland Programme, Interreg Latvija, Estonia-Latvia and Latvia–Lithuania are adjusting their focus, ensuring that no region is left behind. During the Interreg GO! event in Gorizia/Nova Gorica, key figures emphasized the importance of Interreg in fostering European cohesion, building bridges across borders, and promoting regional development. Here’s a look at what each speaker had to say: 🔵 Juraj Droba 2nd Vice-chair of the COTER Commission, Comité Europeo de las Regiones : Interreg is the most tangible expression of European integration, fostering cohesion and regional growth. In Bratislava, projects like the Ecocenter in Unov, Cyklomost Slobody, and Cyklomost Vysomarch show their impact. 🔵 Raffaele Fitto , Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms, European Commission : Interreg builds cultural, social, economic, and physical bridges. There is room for more cooperation, especially at external borders. Modernizing cohesion policy is key. 🔵 Jan Szyszko, Secretary of State for Regional Development in Poland: More than infrastructure, Interreg strengthens European values, solidarity, and regional ties. As Poland leads the EU Council Presidency, this role is more important than ever. 🔵 Younous Omarjee , Vice-President of the European Parliament : Interreg is a cornerstone of the European project.
