Empowering the Next Generation of Renewable Leaders🤓 I had the incredible opportunity to speak with a group of young, brilliant engineers about a topic I’m deeply passionate about—Mega Watts to Mega Waste: Solar Panel Recycling. Their thought-provoking questions and innovative ideas gave me hope for the future of sustainability in the solar industry. We discussed the growing issue of solar waste—panels, wood pallets, and other materials that are quickly filling up our landfills. The solution? Recycling and designing products for sustainability and circularity. When we think beyond installation and plan for responsible end-of-life management, we create a cleaner planet and new economic opportunities. Recycling not only diverts waste but also creates jobs, strengthens communities, and drives innovation. Seeing the passion and curiosity of these young minds reassures me that the future of renewable energy is in good hands. The future looks bright—because of bright minds like these! Sarah's message centered on the power of building action based on trust and relationships, and the profound inspiration we can draw from nature's 3.8 billion years of evolutionary "research." She reminded us that nature has already solved many of the challenges we face, and that by learning from its ingenuity, we can develop truly sustainable and resilient solutions. We've got Engineering for One Planet (EOP) team members on the ground in Akron, Ohio this week for the Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) Conference! Ahead of the conference, EOP Network Manager Victoria Matthew and EOP Network Engagement Coordinator Hadley Willman took in The University of Akron's beautiful campus. They were especially drawn to this mural, which reads "Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring." Such poignant words! And, indeed, the environmental and social challenges EOP aims to address, such as climate change and resource scarcity, are complex and require a long-term commitment along with a sustained collaborative effort, perseverance, and the willingness to endure challenges along the way. In recent years, hackathons have become increasingly prevalent on college campuses around the world, offering community-building and experiential learning opportunities for students and professionals alike. We present a discussion of how Earth Hacks seeks to harness the hackathon innovation model to combat climate issues and drive a justice-focused culture shift in the tech space. Through our focus on utilizing the hackathon innovation model, we curate supportive, inclusive, interdisciplinary environmental hackathons as a mechanism for immersive environmental education and as a method to push forward a constellation of small, impactful environmental projects.
