Our friends at UW Health provide children with a free book at every well-child visit. Their goal: foster a love of reading and strengthen the bond between parent and child—two ingredients of healthy development. And, as Dipesh Navsaria, pediatrician at UW Health and medical director of Reach Out and Read Wisconsin will tell you, there’s a lot a physician can learn about a child simply from how they interact with a book in the exam room. That information can then inform the comprehensive health record. Here’s to a life-long love of reading. #healthcare #healthIT #reading

Healthcare needs to trust AI—but trust can’t just be assumed. It needs to be continuously earned, validated, and refined. A recent paper in Nature Portfolio’s npj Health Systems, co-authored by folks from Epic, highlights why. Evaluating AI-generated clinical summaries isn’t simple. Surface-level metrics aren’t enough. You need to rigorously assess bias, omissions, accuracy, and real-world clinical impacts. As the paper points out, the future of safe AI in healthcare depends on building thoughtful, scalable ways to evaluate its performance. Our AI Trust and Assurance Suite helps healthcare organizations address these challenges. The open-source toolset lets them validate AI locally, track model performance continuously, and ensure equity for diverse patient populations. It’s Global Recycling Day, and many Epic community members are doing great work to reduce waste (and help patients along the way). A few examples: Providence uses Epic to encourage the use of a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective anesthetic agent. In the first seven years of the program, Providence decreased its anesthesia-related greenhouse gas emissions by 78% and saved $2.4 million annually. UC Davis Health, University of Mississippi Medical Center, and The Queen's Health Systems use Epic to offer on-demand virtual visits that increase the convenience of care while keeping patients off the roads. They’re preventing unnecessary ED and urgent care visits, saving patients time and money, and relieving overburdened urgent care clinics and doctors’ offices. Atrium Health sends text messages, email, and MyChart messages through Epic to let patients know when they have a balance due—not only allowing them to pay by text, but also cutting paper out of the process. Early results suggest that Atrium will save $182,000 in labor and paper costs per year. Congrats, everyone! #healthcare #healthIT #sustainability

UC San Diego Health has launched a new "mission control center" to improve patient flow and care coordination throughout the hospital. Optimizing flow across UCSD’s three hospitals requires knowing when a patient should be ready to go home. UCSD uses Epic to help physicians record how long they expect a patient will be hospitalized—and to say what needs to be done before discharge. That information flows right over to each patient’s nurses and case managers, helping those folks prevent bottlenecks and get patients home sooner. Great work, folks! Moving from 10 EHRs to a single, integrated platform certainly is “an organization transformation.” Our friends at UPMC are set to go live with the first wave of their Epic install—covering around 40% of the organization—in September. In this article, Chris Carmody, UPMC’s CTO, shares his perspective on the journey. From Chris: "The more you plan, the more open and transparent discussions you have with all the key stakeholders, the better position an organization will be in...this is not an IT project by any means. It's enabled by IT, but this truly is an organization transformation that we're embarking on." An EHR implementation is a big lift for any organization, large or small. Congrats to everyone at UPMC for all of your hard work so far! Read more: https://lnkd.in/gBKRcZch #healthcare #healthIT #innovation

Ready for Friday already? Us too—but maybe not for the same reason as you. Friday is Pi Day. March 14th. At Epic—a proud haven for nerds—we honor the day all week. There’s a lot in store: the Pi-K run/walk (that’s 3.14k) so staff can preemptively burn a few calories, an open mic session where performers have 3 minutes and 14 seconds to showcase their talents in front of their colleagues, and the first ever Pi-Ku poetry contest where we ditch the traditional 5-7-5 haiku format for something more well-rounded (3-1-4 syllables!). The main event: delicious hand pies made by our culinary team, served precisely at 1:59 PM. This year’s flavors are chocolate, cherry, and the “Epic’s choice” winner, peach! 🥧
