About us

EmblemHealth is one of America’s largest not-for-profit health insurers. With an 85-year legacy of serving New York communities, EmblemHealth offers a full range of commercial and government-sponsored health plans to employers, individuals, and families. We started back in the 1930s, at the height of the Great Depression. Out of hard times, the idea of health insurance was born — a system that would protect everyday people from financial misfortune if they had an accident or illness. Two companies from those early days of health insurance, Group Health Incorporated (GHI) and Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York (HIP), would later merge and become EmblemHealth. And after 85 years, our purpose as a not-for-profit is still the same — to provide quality, affordable health insurance for New Yorkers and their families. We believe in what we’re doing. And we’re looking for passionate people to join us.

In honor of Women’s History Month, EmblemHealth hosted a webinar focusing on women’s health across all ages and life stages. The discussion explored how to maintain a healthy mind and body—with targeted insights into maternal health, perimenopause, and menopause. The program opened with remarks from New York State Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas, Chair of the Task Force on Women’s Issues. “I’m thrilled to partner with EmblemHealth on this important conversation on women’s health at all ages and all stages of life, she commented. “I’m personally in perimenopause and I don’t think we talk enough about the needs of women in perimenopause or menopause, so this is so important.” Guided by Michelle Rakebrand, AVP of Government Affairs at EmblemHealth, our expert panel featured leaders including Eveth Green, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC,MBA, RN, VP of Nursing of at AdvantageCare Physicians; Ruth Greenfield, Registered Dietician at EmblemHealth; and Dr. Ese Oghenejobo, Executive Director, Office of Healthcare System Strategy and Accountability at the NYC Health Department. Their insights not only deepened our understanding of health priorities but also reinforced our commitment as a HealthyNYC campaign champion, working together to increase life expectancy and foster a healthier city for all. One salient takeaway came from Eveth Green: “Make your health a priority. I know we are busy doing a million things, taking care of others—don’t wait until your symptoms become overwhelming before you seek support. Have open conversations with your health care provider. Remember, every woman’s experience is going to be different. So, listen to your body, prioritize that self-care, because you deserve it.” Click the link for the full replay. https://lnkd.in/eCbiNTDk

Next week, we will welcome students from James Madison High School to our headquarters as part of Career Discovery Week (CDW). CDW, launched in 2020 by the Partnership for New York City and NYC Public Schools, introduces students to the many career paths available in New York City and helps them explore the world of work. As we prepare for this event, we asked our colleague Andrea Jacobson, AVP of Public Policy & Government Engagement, to share her perspective on making career choices. In this video, she reflects on the pressure to choose a career path in college, and how real-world experience helped her to discover her true professional interests. Looking for your next role? As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’re sharing a final reflection from AVP of Community Affairs Ann Marie Adamson-Serieux. Throughout March, our colleagues have shared stories of remarkable women who have shaped their own lives and careers. For Ann Marie, inspiration isn’t found in just one figure - it’s in women across the spectrum. From pioneers in history to everyday trailblazers, she reminds us that Women’s History Month isn’t just about looking back; it’s about celebrating the collective strength, resilience, and contributions of women everywhere.

Emerging technology such as genAI is now part of insurers' customer service toolkit, and the software has been embedded into mobile apps, virtual assistants, and call centers. EmblemHealth views the relationship between genAI and humans as complementary, said Karen Ignagni, executive board chair, and employs natural language processing to advise our 400 contact center representatives on how to regulate their speech. Click the link to this Modern Healthcare piece by Nona Tepper to learn how we plan to use genAI to support our members. https://bit.ly/43Z0E8s

Our celebration of Women’s History Month reflecting on the national theme, “Moving forward together! Women educating and inspiring generations,” continues with Judith Zwillenberg, MPH’s tribute to her grandmother, United States Marine Corps Sergeant Rose Sankey Blum: My maternal grandmother’s story is an inspiration to me this Women’s History Month. Grandma Rose was a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, at a time when women weren’t visible in the military let alone in leadership roles. Her experiences from that time remind me to navigate life with grit (and humor) and to take action when called upon, like when she joined up when her country needed her. Being a part of her legacy, I honor her memory every month, but especially this Women’s History Month.
