  • 🏆 **Spotlight: Symbium wins SXSW competition with instant permitting solution for cities** 🏙️ Patience is a virtue, right? But what if we told you residential solar installations are costing Americans roughly $966 million in permitting-related costs each year? For millions of homeowners, permitting accounts for approximately 11.5% of total installation costs. We're thrilled to highlight our portfolio company Symbium who was just announced as the winner of the prestigious Mayors' Matchup Civic Tech Pitch Competition at SXSW! Their innovative permitting platform beat out five other civic tech finalists to win the $10,000 prize and earned them the opportunity to present to hundreds of mayors at the United States Conference of Mayors' 93rd Annual Meeting in Tampa this June. The impact is significant: • Enables instant permitting for home improvement and energy-saving projects 🏠 • Issues permits with 100% accuracy through in-browser regulatory checks ✅ • Dramatically reduces permitting delays that add costs to green building projects 💰 • Democratizes access to complex energy-saving regulations for everyone 🌱 • Recognized by city leaders as a solution that "could make my life easier as a mayor" 🗣️ What makes Symbium's approach revolutionary is how they've transformed the traditionally complex and time-consuming permitting process into an intuitive digital experience. As Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson noted, "[Symbium] stands to offer critical assistance to cities across the country..." Congratulations to CEO Leila Banijamali and the entire Symbium team on this prestigious recognition! As Leila shared, "Symbium strives to democratize regulations for the most complex energy-savings projects so that they are accessible to everyone. SXSW has been a catalyst for our expansion." 📱⛏️ Spotlight: KoBold Metals secures $537M to transform the supply of minerals powering your everyday tech 💻⚒️⚡️🚗📱 Ever left your phone at home and felt completely lost? 😵💫 That moment of panic reflects just how essential critical minerals are to our day-to-day lives. Yet the minerals powering devices like your phone, laptop and EV face twin challenges: the U.S. relies on China for over 80% of EV battery materials, and traditional mining's inefficient methods with a 99.7% failure rate—each unsuccessful exploration costing $5-15 million—wastes billions annually. Diversifying and improving how we find these essential minerals is crucial for a resilient clean energy future. We're highlighting KoBold Metals, a portfolio company of our venture fund Earthshot Ventures who earlier this year closed a $537M Series C funding round, reaching a $2.96B valuation. Using AI to analyze over 100 years of geological data, their technology has already discovered a massive copper deposit in Zambia that will produce 300,000 tonnes annually by the 2030s. The impact is substantial: • Supporting copper, lithium, and nickel production essential for electric vehicle and grid infrastructure ⚡ • Increasing discovery success rates beyond the traditional 0.3% hit rate 📈 • Expanding operations across five continents to secure materials for clean energy 🔋 • Diversifying critical mineral supply chains away from geopolitical competitors 🌎 • Reducing environmental footprint compared to conventional exploration methods 🌱 What makes KoBold's approach revolutionary is their twin AI platforms: TerraShed, which analyzes a century of public and private geological data, and Machine Prospector, which identifies previously unknown mineral deposits. This technology-first approach has attracted investment from leading financial institutions like Durable Capital Partners and T. Rowe Price, who led the $537M round, alongside Equinor, Bond and Mitsubishi and as well as tech luminaries including Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and now Marc Andreessen. Congratulations to Kurt House, Josh Goldman, and the entire KoBold Metals team on this historic funding round. As part of our Earthshot Ventures portfolio, KoBold exemplifies how bleeding-edge technology can address critical resource challenges while creating more resilient, independent supply chains for the clean energy transition. 🛒 **Spotlight: Goodr's innovative grocery stores combat food insecurity amid soaring grocery prices** 🍎🧈🍞🫐🥫🧀 Are you taking a second look at your grocery bill too? Food prices have surged 20% since 2020, meanwhile 40 million Americans face food insecurity and 119 billion pounds of food goes to waste annually—enough to fill 91,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. 🏊🏻 Today's spotlight is on GoodrCo. who partnered with City of Atlanta, where 76% of residents live within half a mile of fresh food, leaving nearly 1 in 4 people in neighborhoods without convenient access to nutritious options. This particularly affects seniors on fixed incomes who must often choose between medicine and meals. Goodr's public-private collaboration launched the first recreation center-based free grocery store at William Walker Recreation Center in December and has expanded to another location opening just three weeks ago at MLK Jr. High School in Dekalb County—making it the first free grocery store in that county. The impact: - 100 local families and seniors gaining monthly access to nutritious food 🧑🤝🧑 - Critical support for residents in the 30331 zip code, identified as a food desert 📍 - $160,000 investment from the Mayor's office as part of a multi-million dollar initiative 💰 - 22.7 million pounds of food rescued to date through Goodr's operations 🚚 - 15+ grocery stores now operating across multiple states and demographics 🏢 In addition to Goodr's pop-up grocery stores and meal packs delivered to youth centers and seniors, Goodr tailors these permanent free grocery locations to its community—senior stores feature low-sodium items and health supplies, while school locations focus on family essentials. Their innovative model now spans from Atlanta schools to Denver Public Schools in partnerships with Amazon and Aetna. "The way that we at Goodr think about solving hunger is changing the norm," explains Jasmine Crowe-Houston. Her approach creates dignity through a shopping experience rather than traditional food banks. Congratulations to Jasmine Crowe-Houston and the GoodrCo. team on scaling this impactful solution that's transforming communities nationwide. Read more: https://hubs.li/Q03dcZqV0

Meanwhile, animal agriculture generates emissions equal to 5x all cars in America combined, consumes 70% of agricultural land, and guzzles 29% of our freshwater. We're highlighting one of our newest portfolio companies Plantible whose Series B funding in November is fueling the rapid scaling of Rubi Protein™—a remarkable functional protein extracted from Lemna (duckweed).Rubi outperforms both animal and plant proteins functionally while enabling food manufacturers to maintain clean labels and reduce costs. The RuBisCO breakthrough: • Functions like animal protein (emulsifying, binding, gelling) at dramatically lower inclusion rates 💪 • Complete protein with PDCAAS score of 1.0—matching animal protein nutritionally 🔬 • Enables egg replacement during supply shortages and price spikes (up to 400% in recent years) 🥚 • Grows on non-arable land without pesticides, using 90% less water than traditional crops while saving millions of acres of farmland 🌍 • Already securing multi-million dollar offtake agreements with major food companies 📈 Most importantly, Rubi Protein isn't merely a substitute—it often outperforms animal and synthetic ingredients while optimizing costs and maintaining clean labels. It's a pragmatic revolution in food manufacturing that improves products while reducing environmental impact. Shoutout to founders Tony Martens Fekini and Maurits van de Ven, who started with an abandoned algae farm in San Diego and are now operating a 100-acre commercial facility in Texas. Their innovative approach to transforming a common aquatic plant into a revolutionary food ingredient exemplifies the kind of pragmatic, market-driven climate solutions we're proud to support.
