Last week, ElectriCities #GovernmentAffairs staff spoke in support of the “Utility Worker Protection Act,” a piece of legislation being considered in the North Carolina General Assembly that would increase penalties for assaults on utility workers. Let’s give it up for our #NCPublicPower #Lineworkers who competed in the American Public Power Association (APPA)’s 2025 #PublicPower Lineworkers Rodeo! #NorthCarolina was well represented with lineworkers from City of High Point, #NewBernNC, #RockyMountNC, Fayetteville Public Works Commission (City of Fayetteville, North Carolina), Greenville Utilities Commission (City of Greenville, NC Government), Town of Apex, #WakeForestPower (Town of Wake Forest, NC), City of Concord, NC, and #KinstonPublicServices (City of Kinston) present. Public power providers—or electric utilities—are a division of local government. Like public schools and libraries, they are owned by the community and run by boards of local officials who are accountable to the citizens. #PublicPower is community power.

#AprilFoolsDay is the perfect time for some good pranks, but our members’ love for #PublicPower has never been a joke! Being a locally-owned and operated utility allows them to take that love and pour it right back into their communities. Every day might seem like #AprilFools when you live in a public power community, but we promise it’s not; they’re just that good!

Today, we celebrate National #FarmWorkersDay! Just like #PublicPower, the #FarmWorkers in member communities have always helped in supporting their local economy and other small businesses. Without the hard work of the farm workers, the farms in our member communities wouldn’t be able to provide some of the ingredients for our favorite dishes. Let’s give it up for our farm workers!
