🌊 Breaking Barriers in Marine Biodiversity Data 🌍📊 To unlock the full power of marine biodiversity data in Europe, we first need to face what’s holding it back. In a major step forward, partners from DTO-BioFlow WP2 (ICES - International Council for the Exploration of the Sea & Fondazione COISPA ETS) have mapped the critical obstacles preventing smooth integration of marine biodiversity data into the EU Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO). 🔍  Through comprehensive analysis, including a review of European reports, surveys and the project’s data blueprint,  four main categories of barriers were identified:  🔹 Resource Barriers – lack of long-term funding & data management support 🔹 Technical Barriers – incompatible formats, missing standards, limited automation 🔹 Cultural & Governance Barriers – siloed data, lack of coordination, limited reuse 🔹 Legal Barriers – unclear rights, variable access, data-sharing limitations Addressing these obstacles is essential for protecting species like cetaceans, plankton, and other vital marine ecosystems by enhancing data integration into the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean (EU DTO). 🚀 The Marine Biodiversity Data Barriers in Europe guide lays the groundwork for an upcoming Barriers Playbook (Autumn 2026), which will deliver: ✅ Technical Solutions – from standard vocabularies to end-to-end pipelines ✅ Governance Models – strategies for collaboration, licensing & trust ✅ Case Studies – real-world lessons from genomics, imaging, biologging & acoustics ✅ End-to-End Approaches – sustainable data flows aligned with EU DTO goals Read the guide and stay tuned: https://lnkd.in/dUKpHMcM #MarineBiodiversity #DTOBioFlow #DigitalTwinOcean #DataDrivenOceans #EUScience #EUDTO #EuropeanCommission #marineresearch #marinedata
