  • Next weekend we are running our first Defence Hackathon in Finland, where the most important mentors 🇺🇦 best combat soldiers. Giving harsh & unique feedback about the frontline reality. And if you are building something very valuable, these folks can sign immediately the first paid order. Being your first real clients! But we have also very serious folks from 🇪🇪 & 🇫🇮 defence forces - giving founders very rare opportunity to build a relationship with 3 different armies. Tomorrow is the last day for registration, please share this with any serious early-stage Defence Tech team!

  • We've just wrapped up Bootcamp 3 in Ukraine, bringing together 20 Defence tech startups with combat-ready products. The global Defence tech ecosystem has truly awakened - as this was by far the most international & no-bullshit event yet! Besides 🇺🇦 teams were coming from 🇪🇪 🇩🇪 🇵🇱 🇱🇻 and 🇨🇦 ! We had a few "clusters" of capabilities in the action - counter-UAV solutions ranging from passive detection to interception with drones or new-gen ammunition. Training systems for casualty care and infantry, both physical and virtual. Deep-strike navigation. Surveillance. Turrets and mini-GRAD! And even smarter mines. This was the first bootcamp where every team could demonstrate their solutions live on the polygon! Some results were so impressive that deals were already being made during the event. But all folks got clear feedback for next steps.    Our next Bootcamp to Rearm Europe is already planned for this summer. And for earlier-stage teams, the Defence Hackathon in Finland is just a few weeks away!

Darkstar recently hosted the largest defense tech hackathon in Europe, bringing together over 200 participants from 10+ countries. The participants included senior technical experts, with some teams already established and others formed onsite. In total, we saw 30 incredible projects covering areas like event cameras, smart mines, demining robots, drone detection, counter-UAV solutions, logistics tracking, psyops, deepstrike, satellite intelligence, 3D mapping, alternative navigation, and much more. Stay tuned - we’ll share more details about these projects soon! What made this hackathon truly special was the participation of Ukrainian soldiers as mentors, including members of the brigade behind the first successful fully robotized assault. For many, it was their first trip outside Ukraine in almost two years, and some joined us straight from the frontlines. We also had representatives from the Ministry of Defence, the Estonian Defence Forces, and the Estonian Defence League. Behind the scenes, this event helped strengthen ties between Ukrainian and Estonian militaries. Legal experts and our banking partners were also on-site, helping teams tackle financing and legal questions. The feedback from mentors and participants has been amazing - this kind of hackathon was a first! Unfortunately, we couldn’t accommodate the additional 100+ people who wanted to join. But don’t worry, more events are coming! Our next hackathon will be in Finland this April, preceded by the week-long Darkstar bootcamp in Kyiv this spring. If you’d like to join us at either event, get in touch - and stay tuned for updates! Thank you Kaitseministeerium / Ministry of Defence of Estonia, Estonian Defence Forces, DefSecIntel Solutions, RASK Attorneys-at-Law, LHV, e-Residency, Droon.ee (Meridein OÜ) for partnering with us in strengthening national security for Ukraine, NATO countries and their allies!

  • The Khartiia Brigade, one of our partners, has made history with the first-ever robot-only assault against Russian troops. Remote-controlled vehicles armed with machine guns and kamikaze drones are no longer just ideas—they’re now a reality! This operation shows what’s possible when the Ukrainian Army meets innovative warfare solutions. 👉 Read more about this historic moment: https://lnkd.in/dVfGCPWH

🚨 Critical undersea cable incidents in the Baltic Sea: How we move forward? Just to highlight the relevancy of one of the challenge areas at the upcoming Darkstar Defense Tech Hackathon: In a very short timespan, there's been two major incidents involving undersea cables in the Baltic Sea. During the first incident in November, the Danish Navy detained the Chinese-registered Yi Peng 3, suspected of severing two undersea cables, 1) C-Lion1 Cable (Finland-Germany) and 2) Lithuania-Sweden Cable. In the second incident during Christmas, Finnish authorities detained the Russian-linked oil tanker Eagle S, suspected of damaging multiple cables: 1) Estlink 2 Power Cable (Finland-Estonia) and 2) three(!) communication cables. In a decisive response, Finnish Coast Guard special forces boarded the Eagle S and detained the vessel for investigation👏. Our conversations with government representatives from Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications shed light on the broader challenges and opportunities here: 🔧 Repair Capacity There are very few specialized repair ships globally - this scarcity is a major bottleneck. Investing in weatherproof repair ships, as well as diversifying the supply chain for critical components is essential. 📍 Localization of Issues While issues with communication cables can be pinpointed quickly, power cable issues remain harder to localize - both at sea and on land. 🚨 Response Coordination Processes for sharing information between institutions have improved but need further optimization for faster reaction times. 🤖 Technology and Innovation Robotized solutions as first responders could fill gaps in naval capacity. Developing submarine sensors and robotic ships is a promising frontier, for detection and response. 🛡️ Shadow Fleet Challenge Ships operating outside conventional comms channels complicate responses. Potential solutions include drone-based communication and warnings - though this strays into complex legal and diplomatic territory. ⚔️ Deterrence Exploring the use of loitering undersea munitions and drones could play a role in enhancing security and deterrence. However, this approach exists at the delicate intersection of infrastructure protection and the broader implications of underwater militarization. ☝️💡 These incidents highlight the need for collaboration across governments, industry, and innovators. We’re keen to work with companies developing robotic ships and advanced sensors to explore practical solutions. Contact Darkstar team to apply to the hackathon. Together, we can turn these challenges into opportunities for strengthening resilience. Also feel free to share your thoughts on mitigating risks to critical infrastructure in the comments!

  • 🔥 Just one week after announcing the DarkStar Defence Hackathon in Tallinn, we received the first 100+ applications from 15 countries, including Finland, Estonia, Ukraine, the UK, and South Korea. Most applicants come from engineering roles, meaning we will work with real hackers for two days. The lineup promises international collaborations and bold ideas. Here’s a glimpse of what teams are working on: 🔘 One team is addressing GPS-jammed environments, envisioning UAVs that integrate AI, satellite imagery, and geolocation for autonomous navigation and last-mile delivery - even in the face of electronic warfare. 🔘 Another is focused on creating cost-effective, end-to-end sensor networks for real-time battlefield intelligence, enhancing decision-making and reducing the risk of friendly fire. 🔘 A standout concept involves autonomous drones equipped with radiofrequency detectors to locate and neutralize enemy infrastructure, such as jammers and radars, offering a decisive advantage in contested zones. Want to join us in Tallinn this winter? Contact the Darkstar team and be part of Europe’s leading defenсe innovation event!
