How to Select the Correct Breaker for an Air Compressor: Breaker selection for air compressors isn’t covered in OEM or standard on-the-job training, leading to many conflicting opinions—ranging from “That’s the electrician’s problem” to “My grandpappy said it’s 175% of the biggest motor.” But what’s the real answer? Let’s break it down. The Right Authority & NEC Guidelines: The National Electrical Code (NEC) sets U.S. electrical standards and is widely adopted. Since air compressors lack a dedicated NEC section, they are treated as multi-motor installations under NEC Section 430 for motor circuits and protection. Key NEC 430 Takeaways: ✅ Do NOT Use Nameplate FLA – Use Table 430.250’s Full Load Current (FLC) instead. ✅ Finding FLC – A 125 HP motor at 460V has an FLC of 156A, even if the nameplate shows 139A. Always use the NEC value. ✅ Multi-Motor Considerations – Factor in additional motors, like a 3-phase fan, per NEC 430.53 guidelines. Step-by-Step Breaker Calculation: Let’s apply these rules to a Sullair air compressor with - Main Motor: 125 HP → 156A FLC Fan Motor: 3 HP → 4.8A FLC 1️⃣ Select the Correct Breaker Type Per NEC 430.53, a multi-motor installation must use an inverse time delay breaker—instantaneous trip breakers are not allowed. 2️⃣ Apply the Correct Multiplier According to Table 430.52, for a Squirrel Cage – Other than Design B motor, the multiplier for an inverse time delay breaker is 250%. 🔹 Main Motor: 156A × 2.50 = 390A 🔹 Add Fan Motor FLC: 390A + 4.8A = 394.8A 3️⃣ Select the Correct Breaker Size Since 394.8A is not a standard breaker size, NEC 240.6 tells us to round up to the nearest standard size—which is 400A. ✅ Final Answer: The correct breaker for this Sullair air compressor is a 400A inverse time delay breaker. 🚨 Incorrect Installation Alert! If a 250A instantaneous trip breaker is installed instead, it is too small and the wrong type, leading to nuisance trips and potential failure. Additional Considerations: Ambient Temperature Temperature affects breaker performance. Most breakers are rated for 40°C (100°F). If the installation environment exceeds this, the breaker must be derated per manufacturer guidelines. Check the breaker case for its temperature rating and consult manufacturer charts for adjustments. Final Thoughts: Selecting the correct breaker for an air compressor isn’t guesswork—it’s about applying NEC rules correctly. Using the wrong breaker type or size can lead to tripped circuits, unnecessary downtime, and even safety risks.
