We're proud to share our 138 kV Substation Expansion Project in the Midwest! ⚡ Tackling complex challenges in electrical and civil/structural design, our team delivered solutions for complex site grading, stormwater management, and environmental degradation. Expanding the 138 kV yard northward to construct a ring bus and introduce a new 138 kV line required relocating breakers, acquiring additional equipment, and reconfiguring the existing bus. Despite challenges, our collaborative approach ensured a compliant and efficient design solution. 🌟 Employee Spotlight - Meet Julia Birdwell 🌟 From intellectual property law to corporate contracts, Julia's legal expertise has spanned multiple industries. Before joining Commonwealth, she built a decade-long career practicing corporate and contracts law at Meijer and Gordon Food Service. But when the right opportunity arose, she took a leap of faith—six months pregnant and all—and found a home at Commonwealth. "It was the best professional decision I have ever made," she shares. Engineering runs in Julia’s blood. Inspired by her father, an electrical and computer engineer, and her mother, a mathematician and software analyst, she followed in their footsteps, earning her engineering degree from Michigan State University. It was there, at an MSU tailgate, that she met her husband, Tony—also an engineer! Now, they are raising their two little boys together, "It is my goal to show my sons that women can do it all—and do it well!" Beyond her work as Senior Contracts Manager, Julia is a dedicated advocate for inclusivity and diversity through Commonwealth’s Women in Engineering and Neurodiversity Resource Group ERGs. She’s also passionate about animal rescue and shares her home with four rescues—three cats and a dog. Public education is another cause close to her heart; she volunteers in her son’s classroom weekly and runs Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week at his school. Julia is also a fantasy football veteran, competing for almost 30 years and finishing as runner-up in Commonwealth’s inaugural league. "I started as my godfather’s assistant, back when pre-ESPN drafts were tracked by hand on poster board," she laughs. For Julia, Commonwealth’s culture of respect, collaboration, and work-life balance makes all the difference.
