"We borrow from nature the space upon which we build." – Tadao Ando This Earth Day, we reflect on our role as stewards of the environment. At Clark Nexsen, we strive to enhance Earth's canvas through designs that mirror and celebrate their natural surroundings. From the elevated UNC Coastal Studies Institute that offers panoramic wetland views to the Lesner Bridge's flowing design that created a new marine habitat, our work connects people with nature. Similarly, the Suffolk Seaboard Coastal Trail winds through rural landscapes while Virginia Beach's 18th Street incorporates green infrastructure that reflects its coastal setting, each project inviting visitors to experience the natural world around them. Today, we celebrate Earth and renew our commitment to creating spaces that respect and enhance our shared planet. 📸: UNC Coastal Studies Institute (Mark Herboth), Suffolk Seaboard Coastal Trail, ViBe District 18th Street Parklet, Lesner Bridge Replacement (Glenn Bashaw)

We recently celebrated the grand opening of Blue Ridge Community College's new automated greenhouse. The 4,320-square-foot facility features motorized shade curtains, automated irrigation systems, and real-time weather tracking to create an optimal growing environment. Students across multiple disciplines, including horticulture, landscape design, cybersecurity, and engineering technology, will learn within this advanced space, preparing for successful careers while strengthening our regional agricultural workforce. Congratulations to BRCC on this significant investment in growing both plants and professionals for the future! 📸: Photos courtesy of Benjamin Ricket and Rich Keen, Blue Ridge Community College

Another successful year of Dance Meets Architecture is in the books! This year, our students' curriculum theme was "Systems and Structures." The winning conceptual design was created by Gabe Hosang. Inspired by the branches and root systems of trees, Gabe's design emphasizes the organic yet structured nature of these natural systems. Our team fabricated Gabe’s concept with vibrant color blocks between the branches to honor his original concept, which featured four distinct quadrants. The design balances rigidity with flowing curves at both the top and bottom. A unique feature of this year's element is that it is constructed entirely of cardboard to allow for easier movement by the dancers. Congratulations to the talented students at Old Donation School on their outstanding performances, and we look forward to working with you again next year! Check out Gabe's design in action!

A temperate rainforest thrives in North Carolina at Gorges State Park, recently spotlighted by Citizen Times. Clark Nexsen designed the LEED Gold Visitor Center to welcome visitors to this unique ecosystem where 90 inches of annual rainfall nurtures rare biodiversity and feeds 26 stunning waterfalls. Our building serves as a sustainability teaching tool for visitors. Designed to harmonize with its surroundings, the center utilizes geothermal wells, rainwater harvesting, and strategic daylighting – making the most of the park's natural resources while fostering appreciation for sustainable practices. Next time you’re in North Carolina, add exploring Gorges State Park’s expansive network of trails to your must-do list!
