The Wauwatosa Police Department is teaming up with experts from Northeastern University to study and improve how we prevent crime in the community. This project is helping us understand which areas need the most attention, how officers can make the biggest impact, and what strategies work best to keep our community safe. Early results show that focusing patrols in key areas has already helped reduce calls for service. “National research shows that for any city, about 4-5% of places (street corners or street blocks) account for 50-75% of crime. Wauwatosa has that same concentration,” said Dr. Piza. “That means your crime prevention resources should be concentrated to match those hot spots.” This three-phase project is designed to do more than just study crime patterns; it aims to make the Wauwatosa Police Department a leader in police-led science, a model where officers actively engage in developing and testing crime prevention strategies. The goal? To build a policing model that is not only evidence-based but also sustainable within the department. Tough numbers to share: There were 691 reported crashes on surface (non-interstate) streets in the City of Wauwatosa in 2024. This includes two people killed and 242 people injured. Of these 691 crashes, 36% involved a distracted, speeding, impaired, aggressive, and/or hit-and-run driver and resulted in one person killed and 73 people injured. Wauwatosa residents told us they want safer streets. We want safer streets. In addition to targeted enforcement of traffic laws, we are working on multiple initiatives. Examples include designing streets that slow speeds and reduce aggressive driving, efforts to simplify the neighborhood traffic calming program, community input through on-line engagement, and data-driven prioritization of capital investments through crash and conflict analysis. We’re proud of the work that the Milwaukee County Comprehensive Safety Action Plan represents and where it leads. In 2025, our engineers will continue engagement with Milwaukee County and our 18 peer communities on the development of community-specific safety action plans. Let’s get to work.

With warmer days ahead, we can't help but look back at the successful Tosa Holiday Market. The numbers are in, and they are impressive. The event brought over $1.8 million in economic impact to the community. Additionally, the event drew a wide variety of visitors: 29% were Wauwatosa residents, 56% were day-trip visitors, and 15% were overnight guests. What a great success!
