Affectionately known as the "City of Pleasant Living”, Shelby is conveniently situated between Asheville and Charlotte, North Carolina. The City of Shelby provides utilities including water, sewer, electricity and natural gas to a growing number of residents and businesses. The City also provides police, fire and rescue, planning and development, sanitation, and housing services for the citizens of Shelby. The City boasts a robust Parks and Recreation system that offers a wide range of recreational opportunities for every age group. The City of Shelby has a Council/Manager form of government. City Council is the policy making and legislative body of City government and includes a Mayor and six Council members. The City Manager serves at their discretion as Chief Operating Officer. The City of Shelby hosted a Service Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, March 26, at the Don Gibson Theatre in Shelby. Employees and staff from many of the City of Shelby’s departments were recognized for their years of service. During the luncheon, the city announced Marcus Kennedy as the Employee of the Year for 2024. Marcus has been with the City of Shelby since 2005 and currently serves as the Electric Superintendent with the Energy Services Department. #ServiceAwardsLuncheon #Congratulations #EmployeeoftheYear #CityofShelby

NOTICE: North Carolina continues to be under a statewide open burning ban. Conditions locally in Shelby and Cleveland County remain extremely dry. On Saturday, March 22, the City of Shelby Fire & Rescue, Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department, and the NC Forest Service responded to a grass and woods fire on Ross Grove Road that covered a large area and destroyed several outbuildings. In addition to open burning, which is generally prohibited in the city limits, the ban also covers fire pits, campfires, and outdoor cooking fires.
