Rancho Palos Verdes is a small contract city located in the luxurious Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, California. Its rolling hills and high bluffs over the Pacific Ocean provide amazing views. It has two world class resorts: the Terranea Hotel Resort and Spa and the Trump National Golf Club. Rancho Palos Verdes celebrated the 50th anniversary of its incorporation in 2023.   • Please join us in congratulating Karen Okstad on her promotion to Administrative Assistant! Karen started her new position in Recreation and Parks this week, but she has been with the department since 2009, when she started as a part-time employee. In her new role, she manages Rec and Parks’ webpages, promotes activities, processes film permits, coordinates the volunteer program, and assists management with various tasks. A talented artist, Karen has designed and illustrated countless flyers, brochures, and graphics promoting City events and programming, as well as the quarterly Recreation Activity Guide. She was instrumental in redesigns of the City website. Karen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Cal State Fullerton. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and photographing the beautiful beaches and nature reserves in and around RPV. She also enjoys illustrating and drawing. On the weekends, she tries to head out to the local mountains to hike and camp. Congrats, Karen!

  • Please join us in welcoming Miguel Garcia to Team RPV! Miguel started last month as an Assistant Planner in the Community Development Department, where he coordinates with applicants, reviews development proposals, and assists with a variety of planning projects. Prior to joining the City, Miguel was in a Veteran Internship Program with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where he assisted Program Managers with World Trade Center Construction, the Cross Harbor Freight Program, and the Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal Replacement Project. He served in the U.S. Army as a Unit Supply Specialist (92Y). Miguel was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, with the 1st Cavalry Division and was deployed to Romania for Operation Atlantic Resolve. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in geography from Cal State Long Beach and during his undergraduate years, he gained an interest in urban planning. While Miguel was serving his country, he earned a Graduate Certificate in urban and regional planning from the University of Texas at El Paso. After he received an honorable discharge from his active-duty service, he earned a Master of City and Regional Planning Degree from the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Miguel has lived in seven states in the last seven years: South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, New Jersey, New York, and California. Welcome, Miguel!

  • Please join us in congratulating Lisa Welstead on her promotion to Recreation Program Coordinator! Before starting her new role in January, Lisa joined the City in 2018 as a Recreation Specialist in the Recreation and Parks Department. Over the years, she has played an integral role in the success of numerous events. Her creativity and adaptability particularly stood out during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she brought fresh ideas to the table, including activities such as "Elf in the Park," a festive holiday scavenger hunt for kids. In her new role, Lisa is taking on a broader leadership position as the coordinator for the City’s most beloved special events, such as Whale of a Day, Fourth of July, Breakfast with Santa, and Movies and Concerts in the Park, enhancing event experiences and fostering community engagement. A proud Rancho Palos Verdes local, Lisa graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School and has cultivated strong connections within the community. Her deep familiarity with and passion for serving the area makes her a tremendous asset to the City.   When she is not at work, Lisa spends most of her time driving her three children to and from sports games, gymnastics practices, and dance recitals. She enjoys volunteering for Little League, Art at Your Fingertips, and serving as PTA President for Cornerstone Elementary School. Congrats, Lisa!
