🌽 🐣 Are you celebrating Easter this weekend or just a big Peeps fan? 🐣 🌽 Our scientists don’t usually spend their days calculating the connection between acres and marshmallow chicks… but hey, it’s Easter, and we made an exception. Did you know an estimated 700 million packages of Peeps are sold each year? Each package has a guesstimated (the exact recipe is a secret!) 12 grams of corn syrup, or slightly less than one tablespoon. Using our best modeling, math magic, and just a sprinkle of scientific flair involving bushels and acres, we calculate that about 3,060 acres of corn are dedicated to Peeps production each year. Not to mention a whole lot of sugar cane. So here’s to the farmers, and the fields, that contribute to the fluffy, bright icons of spring. From our (data-driven) farm to yours — Happy Easter! Thanks for the #Peeps to Just Born, Inc. and thanks for the #PeepsMath to our very own Michael Browne and Peter Carlson

Scaling regenerative agriculture, Scope 3, and carbon programs that engage growers.
About us
CIBO was founded by Flagship Pioneering in 2015 to apply advanced technologies to understand agricultural systems at any scale. We focus these capabilities on powering the transition to sustainable agriculture in order to mitigate climate change, secure the food system, and improve grower outcomes. CIBO has developed a breakthrough approach to scaling and accelerating regenerative agriculture. The CIBO Impact platform connects growers with enterprises ready to meet their sustainability, carbon, and Scope 3 commitments. Companies understand the emissions reduction potential of their agricultural supply chain, incentivize growers to make changes, verify practices, and quantify and report on results. Growers and their trusted advisors rapidly prequalify their land and understand the potential return of different incentive programs. The platform is built on advanced ecosystem simulation, AI, computer vision and software technologies, providing quantification, prediction, and insight capabilities at scale.

🎧 New Podcast Featuring CIBO Co-Founder Bruno Basso 🌱🌍 Great conversation facilitated by MSU Research Foundation and hosted by its CEO David Washburn, featuring Bruno Basso, professor at Michigan State University and CIBO's co-founder. In this episode, Bruno dives into his journey from Naples, Italy to pioneering crop modeling at MSU—and how that scientific research laid the groundwork for what would become CIBO Technologies. You'll hear how his lab’s work with remote sensing, drone imagery, and simulation models led to our mission: help governments, businesses, and nonprofits efficiently scale conservation initiatives and obtain the data needed to prove impact. 🔬 From building a 30-person research team to launching a venture-backed agtech company, Bruno offers a powerful look at the intersection of science, technology, and entrepreneurship. 🎙️ Have a listen in the links below #AgTech #SustainableAgriculture #CarbonMarkets #CIBOTechnologies #EnvironmentalImpact #AI #RemoteSensing #FoodSystems #Conservation #SmartFarming #Podcast
🎙️ New Episode: Modeling Smarter Farming with Bruno Basso (Part 1) What if you could simulate how every square meter of farmland responds to soil, slope, and weather—and use that data to improve both productivity and environmental outcomes? In this episode of the MSU Research Foundation podcast, Professor Bruno Basso shares how his research at MSU led to the development of advanced crop models and the founding of CIBO Technologies, a company helping businesses understand the impact of how food is grown. Discover how drone imagery and crop models are helping the ag industry see what plants can’t say out loud. Great start to our week. In this piece on USA TODAY Special Edition: U.S. Department of Agriculture covering support of sustainable commodities, our CEO Daniel Ryan explains the long-term value, both in revenue and productivity, of investing in the regenerative agriculture transition and the role public funding programs play in reducing financial risks for farmers. When stacked and scaled with the help of innovation, public and private partnerships can unlock new opportunities for building a more resilient and efficient agriculture system, creating value that transcends uncertainty. 🌍 The Importance of Powering Data-Driven Sustainability in Food Systems 🌱 Earlier this week, members of our team attended a thought-provoking session on the future of climate-smart agriculture. The event, hosted by Innovation Forum, brought together a diverse group of leaders who shared valuable insights into how technology is shaping more sustainable and resilient food systems—an effort we’re deeply passionate about and committed to advancing. 📣 Highlights included: Thomas Gent, a regenerative farmer from Gentle Farming, shared firsthand experiences of transitioning to climate-smart practices and the real-world challenges farmers face. Reineke van Riemsdijk(Nestlé Nespresso SA) and Claire Petit(Mars Petcare) discussed the strategies, obstacles, and lessons learned from scaling climate-smart practices within their supply chains. Simon Haldrup, CEO of Agreena, shed light on how digital solutions can empower farmers to make data-driven, climate-positive decisions. At CIBO Technologies, we’re committed to accelerating the transformation of food systems with cutting-edge technology. Events like this remind us of the pivotal role of collaboration and data-driven solutions in building a more sustainable future. A special thank you to Agreena for hosting this important conversation and for the impactful work they’re doing to support regeneration across Europe. 🌱 We are proud to be part of this moment in the movement toward a more sustainable world. 🔗 #Sustainability #ClimateSmartAgriculture #FoodSystems #DataDriven #AgTech #RegenerativeAgriculture #CIBOTechnologies #ClimateAction 🌍

Congratulations to CIBO's founder, Bruno Basso, on receiving this well-deserved award! Your innovations and vision have set the stage for a brighter future in agriculture. With the support of our partners at Flagship Pioneering , CIBO continues to drive progress in regenerative agriculture, empowering farmers with the tools and incentives they need to succeed.
John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor and MSU Foundation Professor, Michigan State University; Cofounder of CiBO Technologies
I am honored to be recognized with the prestigious 2025 Technology Transfer Achievement Award by the Michigan State University Innovation Center. This recognition is a testament not only to the impact of our work but also to the importance of translating research into real-world solutions. Ten years ago, I had the privilege of co-founding CIBO Technologies with Ignacio Ignacio Martinez and Noubar Noubar Afeyan of Flagship Pioneering. Our shared vision was to build a science-driven platform that would transform how we manage and sustain agricultural production. Today, CIBO continues to quantify, model, and recommend sustainable farming practices that benefit farmers, communities, and the environment. This award reflects the collaborative spirit that drives innovation at the intersection of academia, industry, and society. I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to solutions that improve food production, farmers’ profit, and environmental stewardship. Sincere thanks to MSU President Kevin Kevin Guskiewicz for attending the event and celebrating this recognition with us. Your presence made the occasion even more meaningful.
