Research at Children's National Hospital identified a lack of equitable access to quality care for pediatric tracheostomy patients and their families. Some of the primary problems included training, peer support, and supplies. Children’s hospitals can offer interventions now to help improve tracheostomy care at home. When a family asked Dayton Children’s Hospital to turn off the fluorescent lights above the bed in the pre-op room, it became an “aha” moment. "Some neurodiverse people can actually see the flickering in those lights; we can't perceive it, but they can,” says Sean Antosh, MD, pediatric anesthesiologist at Dayton Children's Hospital. By creating sensory-friendly rooms and care practices, the hospital has reduced the use of pre-surgery calming medications from 90% to 20%. “The rooms are great, but it’s the culture change we’ve had that is the most important part of the program,” said Dr. Antosh. “You must change the way you provide care.” Learn more during #AutismAwarenessMonth: https://lnkd.in/ezZdsifQ #sensoryfriendly #autismawareness

Dr. Bulut, medical director at UCLA Health's Mattel Children’s Hospital, raised awareness on the consequences when kids are not adequately considered in disaster planning and helped train non-pediatric physicians to provide emergency care for children.
