During his first season as CSO principal librarian in 2023/24, Justin Vibbard experienced a full-circle moment when the Orchestra performed Bartók’s Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin — a shorter version of the piece he worked on with Pierre Boulez as a Civic Orchestra of Chicago Library Fellow more than two decades earlier. The Driehaus Museum’s newly renovated Murphy Auditorium has been reborn as a music venue, initiating an important local artistic partnership with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra — starting with a CSO chamber concert on April 8. “The space is beautiful, historic and intimate — all essential qualities for the presentation of chamber music,” said Randy Elliot, the CSO’s director of artistic administration.
