Updates

  • In 2016, the Chicago Botanic Garden and Lawndale Christian Health Center collaborated to develop the Farm on Ogden, an innovative space that takes a “whole person” approach to community health and wellness, fostering lasting change and impact. The partnership’s Windy City Harvest VeggieRx produce prescription program enables clinicians at the health center to prescribe free produce boxes with recipes, nutrition counseling, and cooking classes.    A newly published research article “An Urban Farm–Anchored Produce Prescription Program’s Impacts On Weight Reduction” in the April issue of Health Affairs highlights the evaluation of the VeggieRx program from January 2016 to December 2021. At 18 months, the VeggieRx group had a 6.71 pound lower mean weight compared to the control group, as well as a 4.7 percent lower body weight. The results suggest that individualized food prescriptions that are anchored to place-based strategies, like the Farm on Ogden, can improve health outcomes while growing healthier communities.   Check out the full article: https://lnkd.in/gM8WM28P

  • We were thrilled to host Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery, science communicator, educator, and author, as a guest presenter during a Garden staff meeting today. Her book, "Lessons from Plants", is a popular treatment of botany and what life lessons we can take from plants and demonstrates how human society might be improved by appreciating the gifts plants give us and how plants function. Dr. Montgomery co-founded and co-organizes Black Botanists Week and was a 2024 Hutchinson Medal awardee from the Garden which recognizes outstanding leadership or professional accomplishment that has been significant in furthering horticulture, plant science or conservation.

  • We are honored to share that Jean M. Franczyk, FRSA, President and CEO, has announced she will retire in March 2026, marking ten years in the role. During her tenure, the Garden has seen an extraordinary period of growth, change, and profound commitment to help grow a better world by connecting people to the power of gardens and green space. Over the next 12 months, Jean will work diligently to deliver outstanding programs and future planning that will affirm the Garden’s position as one of the best botanic gardens in the world.

  • Spring arrives at the Garden with a flourish of blooms, but this year, many eyes are also fixed on an 80-foot pole rising toward the sky. In collaboration with Friends of the Chicago River and Forest Preserves of Cook County a hexagonal platform was built in 2016 to support ospreys, a threatened species in Illinois. A pair of ospreys were spotted last April nesting on the platform for the first time, and there is hope the nest will be occupied again this year. • Since 2019, the Garden has been tending to an endangered cacti seized by federal agents at O’Hare International Airport. Native to Mexico and southwestern Texas, the gray-green cacti called Ariocarpus fissuratus was entrusted to the Garden as one of 90 plant rescue centers nationwide. Sometimes called the living rock cactus, Ariocarpus fissuratus is prized by collectors who either don’t know or don’t care that the plant is critically endangered. • Happy #StPatricksDay! 💚 Did you know microclover is being studied by Negaunee Institute conservation scientists as a lawn alternative? As luck would have it, it’s great for the soil, stays low to the ground, and could support pollinators. Plus, discover green returning to the Garden during our Free Admission Days from March 17 - 20. Preregistration is required for nonmembers.

  • Tonight, the skies will host an extraordinary celestial event: a total #lunareclipse. At precisely 10:57 p.m., the Earth’s shadow will begin to envelop the moon, painting it in mesmerizing shades of deep red—a phenomenon often called the "Blood Moon." Unlike a solar eclipse, no special glasses are needed to enjoy this breathtaking sight. Totality will last until 2:31 a.m. and the eclipse will conclude at 3:47 a.m. Grab a blanket, find a cozy spot under the stars, and enjoy nature’s free show! 🌕✨
