The Arboretum’s Vice President of Science and Conservation Dr. M. Murphy Westwood (right) and Sustainability Director Dr. Rachel Novick, PhD, LEED AP (left) met atmospheric scientist Dr. Don Wuebbles after his talk today on climate resilience with renowned meteorologist Tom Skilling and moderator UIC Chancellor Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda at the City Club of Chicago. It was a timely and impactful discussion about climate science and the importance of mitigation strategies to curb climate change. We welcome David Chearo as the Arboretum’s new vice president of operations and planning. In this newly established role, David will lead planning initiatives to support the Arboretum’s strategic direction and priorities, including executing the organization’s new long-term comprehensive site plan. Aarav, Lily, and Emily (first picture, left to right) are part of the Arboretum’s three-month Youth Climate Action pilot program, which empowers high school students to inspire action around climate change. Among other projects, the students created a “Recycle Toss” game for the Arboretum’s Children’s Garden. Kids are provided bottle caps to place on plastic bottles, so the caps can also be recycled. The main message of the game is that using less plastic is an important way to protect our ecosystems and fight climate change! #YouthClimateAction #ClimateAction #Recycling #Sustainability
