In a pair of letters this week, Ohio's Governor, Lieutenant Governor, U.S. Senators, and eleven Members of Congress are urging Energy Secretary Chris Wright to prioritize U.S.-owned, American-made uranium enrichment technology when making decisions about how to allocate $3.4 billion in federal funding. Centrus is grateful to have their strong support as we work to restore America's ability to enrich uranium -- with U.S. technology, built by American workers. As Ohio leaders noted in these letters, U.S. taxpayer dollars should be used to create jobs here at home, not overseas. It is time to reclaim American leadership in uranium enrichment. It was great to catch up with our friends from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) during the World Nuclear Fuel Cycle (#WNFC) conference last week in Montreal. Last year, KHNP signed a purchase commitment with Centrus to support construction of new uranium enrichment capacity at Centrus' American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. The purchase commitment from KHNP covers a decade of deliveries of Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) to help fuel Korea’s large fleet of reactors. It is contingent upon Centrus securing the substantial public and private investment necessary to build the new capacity. KHNP’s support demonstrates strong commercial interest in the capacity that Centrus can bring to the market, and tremendous potential to strengthen civil nuclear cooperation between our countries.   Pictured (from left to right): Sung-Tae Yang, KHNP Vice President of the Nuclear Fuel Office; John Donelson, Todd Howard and Elizabeth Ferpozzi of Centrus, and Heui-Koo Park, KHNP Senior Manager of Nuclear Fuel Supply.

Our SVP and Chief Marketing Officer, John Donelson, spoke at the World Nuclear Fuel Cycle (#WNFC) conference sponsored by the Nuclear Energy Institute and the World Nuclear Association this week in Montreal. John gave an update on our ongoing production of High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (#HALEU) in Piketon, Ohio. It is the only licensed and operating HALEU production facility in the western world, and is also licensed to produce Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU). As John noted, we are working to secure sufficient public and private funding, coupled with customer offtake agreements, to enable us to expand capacity and deliver large-scale production of LEU, LEU+, and HALEU.     As an American-owned, publicly traded enrichment supplier, Centrus can bring much-needed supply diversity and competition to the uranium enrichment market, which is currently controlled by four foreign, state-owned companies in Russia, China and Europe.  

In their biennial uranium “Red Book” released yesterday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency project that nuclear power capacity globally will grow by between 46 percent (low case) and 128 percent (high case) over the next 25 years.  Whoever wins the race to fuel those new reactors will gain tremendous geopolitical influence on nonproliferation and other matters. Right now, state-owned corporations from other countries control 100 percent of the world's uranium enrichment capacity. It's time to change that. Centrus is proud to be leading the effort to restore America's ability to enrich uranium at scale.

Centrus is pioneering HALEU production today at our enrichment plant in Piketon, Ohio. We're working to secure the necessary public and private financing to scale up the facility to meet the full range of U.S. commercial and national security for enriched uranium. The US Army Corps of Engineers is recommending a Small Modular Reactor (#SMR) for Fort Drum in New York -- to provide reliable, resilient 24-7-365 power, regardless of weather, for a key military installation. Of course, Fort Drum isn't unique; SMRs and microreactors could be enormously valuable for a broad range of missions and installations. The military could be one of the "first movers" in advanced nuclear deployments, which will create positive synergies and drive commercial deployments as well.
