Today marks World Autism Awareness Day. We were proud to partner with CHOC Children's on The Thompson Autism and Neurodevelopmental Center, a facility tailored for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. Our design team used evidence-based design strategies shown to be calming to children with ASD throughout the building. “The goal for this unit is to ensure that we not build a hospital that’s obsolete the day it opens.” The Innovation Design Unit at University of Nebraska Medical Center, which opened earlier this year, was featured in Becker's Healthcare as an example of future-proofing hospital investments. Blue Cottage of CannonDesign worked with the health system on an extensive visioning and planning effort to create the concept and framework for the IDU. The 17-bed unit, which is inside of an operational inpatient unit, currently features technology such as real-time location services and virtual nursing capabilities.
