Today, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond released a public statement below in reaction to the actions of Homeland Security agents at Los Angeles public schools. *Additional information provided by the Los Angeles Unified School District has confirmed that the agents entered the school offices but did not go further onto the school campuses.*

Preparing Our Students for a Strong Future! 🚀 State Superintendent Tony Thurmond attended the Youth and Young Adult Resource and Career Fair yesterday in Richmond. This amazing youth-focused event connected local high school students with top employers, training providers, and valuable resources. Superintendent Thurmond emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities and that these future leaders continue to be inspired and learn about their capabilities to maximize their full potential.

Under the direction of the Education Administrator I of the Focused Monitoring and Technical Assistance III (FMTA III) Unit, the Education Programs Consultant works independently providing technical assistance and monitoring special education compliance in assigned areas as required and consistent with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The FMTA III Unit is responsible for completing local educational agency (LEA) monitoring reviews of both compliance and performance indicators. Travel may be required •Review and monitor local educational agency (LEA) Compliance and Improvement Monitoring (CIM) process who are in Targeted Monitoring Review status •Participate in monitoring review activities including but not limited to: student file reviews and corrective action follow-up to ensure LEA compliance with state and federal special education laws and regulations.  •Review, analyze, and aggregate district and student data; proficient in Microsoft Software Programs, specifically Excel and Outlook  •Maintain open communication with Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) directors, special education directors, and superintendents; work with districts to obtain access to district files and student records  •Review and analyze student individualized education plans (IEPs), LEA policies, procedures, and practices to ensure Special Education Laws are enforced  •Attend monitoring plan meetings and post review meetings  •Provide technical assistance to assigned counties and/or LEAs, including, but not limited to: State Performance Plan Indicators and Targeted Monitoring Status •Facilitate trainings to LEAs and SELPAs •Conduct research, analysis, and preparation of report materials to Department administration, state legislature, federal government, and other agencies as required  •Duty statement will be provided upon request. The CDE extends sincere appreciation to Marriott International and the Sheraton Hotels & Resorts in downtown Los Angeles for hosting the Pasadena Unified School District’s inaugural Student Think Tank Youth Conference earlier this month as we continue to stand alongside fire-impacted communities in Southern California. We are so thankful that they lent their space to these incredible students, who were allowed to shine in a professional setting and could advocate for student representation in district decision-making. Marriott has also offered to host additional school dances and graduations this spring to schools affected by the wildfires. We are grateful to our philanthropic partners who have come together in long-term support of Los Angeles and Pasadena schools.
