PRESS RELEASE: $8.6 Million Awarded to Lake Tahoe Community College to Support Tahoe Basin’s First Public Safety Training Complex. As devastating wildfires continue to rage across Los Angeles, the California Community Colleges Board of Governors unanimously approved the creation of a Fire and Forestry Pathways Demonstration Project, allocating $15 million across 19 community colleges to expand workforce training. Of the $15 million allocation, Lake Tahoe Community College was awarded $8.6 million to provide leadership and technical assistance for the colleges in the Project and to support the construction of a new Tahoe Basin Public Safety Training Complex. “This Project will expand workforce education in fields that lead to high-wage and in-demand careers,” said CCC Chancellor Sonya Christian, “the Board of Governors’ action to approve this Project represents an important investment in California’s future emergency response capabilities and ensures the state is better equipped to prevent and respond to the increasing threats of climate change and wildfire.” READ MORE at https://lnkd.in/gtGq4gwe. #HappyBirthday to the late #CACommunityColleges alumna Beverly Cleary; she would have turned 109 today. Best-selling children’s author Beverly Cleary enrolled at Chaffey College with aspirations of becoming a children’s librarian. After two years of study at Chaffey, she transferred to UC Berkeley and continued on to the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Washington, where she earned a master’s degree in library science. As a children’s librarian in Yakima, Wash., Cleary empathized with her young visitors who had difficulty finding books with characters they could identify with. After a few years of making recommendations and performing live storytelling in her role as a librarian, Cleary decided to start writing children’s books herself, focusing on characters young readers could relate to. Her first book, “Henry Huggins,” was published in 1950 and was the first in a series of fictional chapter books about Henry, his dog, Ribsy, his neighborhood friend, Beezus and her little sister, Ramona. Her books have been praised for the way she wrote about childhood, specifically the way she captures the experience of children growing up in middle-class families. She passed away on March 26, 2021 at the age of 105. Beverly Cleary’s books appear in more than 20 countries in 14 languages. Her characters, including Henry Huggins, Ellen Tebbits, Otis Spofford, Beezus and Ramona Quimby, Ribsy, Socks and Ralph S. Mouse, are still beloved by children today. Happy birthday to former College of San Mateo student, Hall of Fame coach and Emmy Award-winning NFL broadcaster, John Madden! Madden has deep roots in the California Community Colleges. A football star in high school, Madden played a couple seasons at the College of San Mateo and launched his coaching career at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Community colleges, Madden said, “serve a great purpose and it’s a cheap way to get an education where it kind of puts everyone on the same playing field. Without them there'd really be a lot of us that didn't get where we eventually got. The job that (community colleges) do is really, really immense.” Madden, who earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo, said he became interested in coaching after getting hurt his rookie year with the Philadelphia Eagles. While rehabbing from his knee injury, Madden would watch films with quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, who analyzed and explained what was happening. “I ended up with a degree in teaching, and my love for football meshed with teaching,” he said.
