AI and Data Engineering is moving at a dizzying pace for specialists and generalists alike... With the help of Ozair A. from ekai, we brought in a couple experts this week - Alex Arutyunyants, Associate Partner from QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey and William Lehmann, Founder & GP at Step Function Ventures - to give an audience of the MGMT Boston Operators Club and local engineers an update on the playing field. What'd we learn? 🏄 The goalposts have moved on what it means to be technical 🤔 Data definitions, context and lineage often still resides in people's heads, especially in enterprises. Without that texture, it's impossible to build a scalable AI/ML solution. 😎 Startups/founders should start focusing earlier on UX and design since that may be critical to creating user stickiness. Taste is even more important to building an enduring advantage 📊 Businesses are increasingly using unstructured data - often combining that with structured data - for novel use cases, which is not something that may have been possible five years ago. 🤯 There has also been a functional and org chart shift. We’ve moved from siloed roles to more “full-stack” data people. Engineers are expected to understand models, and scientists need to understand pipelines. The lines have blurred and there’s a new class of hybrid roles: LLM engineers, AI product engineers, and full-stack ML practitioners. Everyone’s being pulled toward full-stack whether they like it or not 😳 What should we do?? 😳 Optimize for your network and cultivate a group of people who have great taste to learn from! AI is making functionality less of a barrier. So having user empathy, knowing what to ship, and when, knowing how to craft a delightful user experience are going to be more important than ever. These are seemingly “intangibles” but there is an absolute craft to them. Do whatever you can to demonstrate thought leadership early.
