🌊 What’s in the water during and after a storm? It’s something we may need to pay closer attention to. While floods and heatwaves dominate the climate change conversation, a recent article from a @BlueAdaptEU researcher sheds light on a more hidden danger: how extreme weather is making it easier for harmful viruses to persist in our water systems. Viruses such as norovirus and adenovirus can survive in water for days, particularly in cooler or cloudy conditions. With stormwater increasingly overwhelming urban sewer systems, untreated sewage is being discharged into natural waters more often, raising the risk of waterborne infections. 🔍 The research explores how viruses persist under different weather conditions. For instance, enteric viruses, which cause stomach upsets, remained infectious in seawater for up to three days at 30°C. At lower temperatures, they lasted even longer, persisting for up to a week. The scientists suggest that, to reduce the risk of infection, people should avoid recreational waters affected by sewage discharges for at least 2.5 days during cloudy weather, and at least 24 hours after sunny days. With more extreme weather expected in the future, these risks are likely to intensify, especially after heavy rains that follow droughts. The findings underline the need for governments and health agencies to develop targeted risk management strategies to address the growing threats posed by climate change. 📖 Read the full piece via The Conversation: https://lnkd.in/e7XMt6hr #ClimateHealth #WaterborneDiseases #PublicHealth #SewagePollution #ExtremeWeather #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalHealth #EUResearch
