Will you join us in supporting music education for all in our 60th year? www.bsmny.org/generations Meet our Honoree, Ken Michaels! As we prepare for this special evening, we invite you to learn more about our honoree, Ken Michaels. Ken has been part of the Bloomingdale story for decades. His connection began in the 1970s as a young clarinet student, introduced to the school by his parents. Decades later, his own children became Bloomingdale students, and since 2014, he has led the school as Board President - championing music education, and making sure that Bloomingdale continues to serve our community for generations to come. #chapter60 #generations #springbenefit #donate 🎥 Dayna Grayber

A beautiful write up by I Love The Upper West Side ! "Music education has benefits many aren’t aware of, from a positive influence on motor and math skills, to growing self-confidence and boosting creativity and emotional development. It’s more important than ever to maintain these principles, and Bloomingdale’s robust series of classes, ensembles and lessons can make this a reality." Read the full article at the link below. Post 17: Performathon Begins (2001) - History of Bloomingdale In 2001, we kicked off our first Performathon—a full day of student performances to raise funds for scholarships. The tradition continues, supporting our mission of accessible music education. “As Bloomingdale grew and evolved, greater efforts were made to engage more student involvement in the process of raising funds toward financial assistance. This was accomplished through the yearly “Performathon” – a day-long event that included performances by the entire student body. When Performathon first began in 2001, students collected donations through direct requests to family, friends, teachers, neighbors, acquaintances, and even approached pedestrians on the sidewalk or selling brownies, cookies and lemonade on street-corners. To motivate students to raise as much money as possible, prizes are awarded for the highest fundraisers. like tee-shirts, tote bags, baseball caps, sweatshirts, Apple watch, Macbooks, and more. The highest amounts raised by a single student have reached nearly $3,000, and in its first year, the school raised $7,500. Since then, Bloomingdale has raised over $20,000 each year as a result of the Performathon. Students and faculty celebrate the incredible success of Performathon each year with lunch and an ice cream party. To say that Performathon has been enormously successful would be an understatement. Not only has it provided important and needed financial aid to support students in their study of music, but it has brought the students, faculty, and administration together as a community in a combined effort to be self-supporting realistically and artistically.” - Monica Verona, excerpt from ‘Breaking the Silence: Celebrating Bloomingdale School of Music’ Support Bloomingdalele today! “60 Years in Harmony: The History of Bloomingdale School of Music” Post 15: The 1996 Piano Campaign By the mid-90s, Bloomingdale’s pianos had seen decades of music-making—and it was time for a refresh. In 1996, Executive Director Lawrence Davis launched the Piano Campaign to restore and renew the school’s 17 pianos, ensuring students had high-quality instruments to learn and perform on. “In 1996, Lawrence Davis launched a piano campaign to raise funds to renew and restore the school’s 17 pianos. With a series of concerts on ‘multiple bad pianos,’ as it was called, he was able to receive newer pianos through private donors and restore others.” - Monica Verona As we celebrate 60 years of music and community, we’re bringing history to life with AI-animated historical photos, keeping these memories alive for the next generation.
