  • New Substack Alert! 🚨 Our CEO, Samantha Alexander, just dropped a must-read piece: The Great Calorie Lie 🍽️. ‘Eat less, move more’ is common advice—but is it really the key to better health? Sam breaks it down and explores what truly makes a difference. Give it a read: https://lnkd.in/gfQg2ttw

New research shows that our bodies' energy math is less like a bank account, and more like a fixed budget. We’ve been told for decades: “Eat less. Move more. That’s how you lose weight.” But what if it's more nuanced than that? It’s called the Constrained Energy Expenditure model. And it turns out, your body burns about the same number of calories each day, no matter how much you move. Yep. You can exercise more… and still not burn more. In my latest Substack, I break down: ✅ The science behind your body’s fixed energy budget ✅ Why calorie counting keeps failing us ✅ What actually works for long-term health and weight stability This one’s worth the read — particularly if you’ve ever blamed yourself for “not trying hard enough.”

As innovation and technology advances, does food processing enhance food security by making food healthier, safer, and more accessible, or does it fuel the rise of ultra-processed foods? Our expert panel explores how innovation in food processing can improve nutrition and redefine food preservation to combat food deserts. Julian Melchiorri, CEO & Founder at Arborea, comments that "everyone around the world should have access to healthy food. And, ideally, countries should be able to produce nutritious food independently." Recognizing the importance of collaboration, he adds that "all together, we can solve different aspects of the broader challenge that is malnutrition." Edward Fish, Senior VP & General Manager, Varietal Solutions at Bay State Milling Company, adds that "while we need innovation everywhere -optimization across our network to avoid food waste, improve transportation, software-, it's also a matter of consumers choices, and change is hard. As an industry, what can we do to better inform the consumer and eventually lead them to better choices?" With: Ashley Hartman (Bluestein Ventures), Edward Fish (Bay State Milling Company), Samantha Alexander (bitewell) and Julian Melchiorri (Arborea).

How to Choose “Healthy” Food. In the latest from CNN, Jacqueline Howard shares the newest update from the FDA on new standards for foods before they can be labeled as “healthy” on their packaging. Currently, “about 5% of all packaged foods in the current marketplace are labeled “healthy”…Some foods that could previously carry the healthy label — such as white bread and heavily sweetened cereal and yogurt — will no longer qualify. But nuts, seeds, salmon, olive oil and some peanut butters and canned fruits and vegetables are among those that will newly qualify. The FDA is proposing new nutrition labels to the front of food packages. Nutrition labels may come to the front of food packages under FDA proposal. The FDA is also working on a symbol that can be put on packages to help consumers more easily identify foods that are considered healthy, and it’s developing a plan for nutrition labeling that would go on the front of food packaging to complement the more in-depth labels on the back.” While this is certainly a step in the right direction, there is a still a need today for consumers to be educated on Food Is Medicine and Health + Wellness Services online and in store during their shopping experience. Companies like bitewell are partnering with Kroger Health and leading the charge on consumer wellness education through OptUP with personalized FoodHealth scores. We need to see more of this in the marketplace and the time to innovate and help pave the path for a consumer’s wellness journey is now. https://lnkd.in/g_fAEZSK #FoodIsMedicine #Health #Wellness #Kroger #FDA Kroger #GutHealth #bitewell #WellnessJourney #FoodEducation #NutritionEducation
