Excited to highlight some of our early projects building out at Virginia Commonwealth University. We are now working to map the millions of cells that make up pediatric respiratory systems in health and disease states, after being selected as one of the winning projects in the Scale Biosciences 100 Million Cell Challenge. This initiative, supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Ultima Genomics, NVIDIA, and BioTuring, will accelerate single-cell genomic sequencing to better understand diseases affecting children's respiratory health. Importantly, we consider the respiratory system as an interconnected cul-de-sac of breathing, uniting traditionally separately studied spaces such as the various parts of the lung, throat, nose, and oral cavity--something we call the "inhalation interface". This also means we will be building out some of the first pediatric oral tissue data, including single cell RNAseq of soft tissues associated with primary (baby) teeth for the first time. Children's immune and respiratory systems are still developing, making them particularly vulnerable to airborne pathogens, allergens, and environmental exposures. By leveraging single-cell multiomics and AI, our team is building a comprehensive cellular atlas of the nasal, oral, and airway mucosa across pediatric development, including in conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and viral infections. This dataset will be a valuable resource for identifying new therapeutic targets and repurposing existing drugs. This project builds on foundational work initiated in 2021 by James Hagood and has now expanded to a global consortium including Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (BRIC-inStem), @Pontifical University of Rio Grande do Sul and USP - Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil, and @Helmholtz Zentrum München in Germany. Together, we are advancing pediatric respiratory health through high-resolution cellular mapping. Looking forward to sharing more as we generate new insights from this work.
