The 25% steel tariffs that took effect Thursday apply to bike chains, bringing the tariffs on Chinese chains to 70%. A few other bike products may be caught up on the new steel and aluminum tariffs as well. https://bit.ly/4bsXgVj

A view from the other side - BRAIN checks in with a Vietnam bike importer/distributor for his take on reciprocal tariffs.
A view from the other side ... I've reported that if the Trump administration imposes reciprocal tariffs, which it could do as soon as April 2, the largest impact on the bike industry would be on Vietnam imports. That's because most nations have relatively low duties on U.S. bike products — in some cases they have lower duties than the U.S. But Vietnam's duties on U.S. bicycles and bike products are relatively high at 45-55%. Some major industry brands have moved production to Vietnam in recent years as they look for alternatives to China. Besides some bikes and e-bikes from Vietnam, a few high-end brands have carbon frames made there. The U.S. imported about $60 million worth of bike products from Vietnam last year. Why Vietnam has such high duties on U.S. goods is a bit of a long story. But you may ask — does Vietnam even import any U.S. bike products? Turns out they do. A Vietnam-based bike importer/distributor called Premium Distribution imports an array of U.S. brands, including Trek, Giro, SRAM and others. And while some of those products are made in Asia (and thus not subject to Vietnam's duties on U.S. goods), a few come directly from the States, including Trek ProjectOne bikes, Zipp wheels and GU nutritionals, for example. I recently checked in with Premium Distribution's owner, Canadian Daniel Haziza, for his perspective.

If US import tariffs on bikes are adjusted to match other countries’ duties on US products, prices would increase steeply on some bikes and e-bikes, including those from Vietnam. But many questions remain about Pres. Trump’s reciprocal tariff memo. https://bit.ly/4hVopC5
