“This summit is a stepping stone to establish a foundation for this country where we see young people leading and creating the policy that directly impacts us.” - Malaak Elhage
In mid-2023, the White House launched an ambitious effort to reimagine youth policymaking, leading to the groundbreaking White House Youth Policy Summit and concrete next steps that positively shifted how federal partners did their work and led to tangible and positive outcomes for young people. Anchored by the U.S. Department of Education and the Funders for Adolescent Science Translation (FAST), this first-of-its-kind gathering brought together young people, federal policymakers, and advocates to co-create solutions for a more equitable future. Designed by an intergenerational team of advisors—half youth and half adult allies—the Summit flipped the traditional script, ensuring youth expertise took center stage.
These six key takeaways reflect the insights and recommendations from the Summit’s collaborative sessions, emphasizing the importance of process, preparation, and genuine youth-adult partnerships in policy change.
