  • Despite what you might hear from anti-mining groups, the Flambeau Mine out of Ladysmith, Wisconsin was a success and is a great example of responsible industry. The Flambeau Mine was a Copper mine and it was located along the shores of the Flambeau River and operated from 1993 to 1997 and finished reclamation by 1999. Flambeau was the first mine to earn permits and operate under Wisconsin’s stringent mining laws. The WDNR holds Flambeau as an example of a successful operation and successful closure. The reclaimed site is now home to acres of wetlands, hundreds of species of plants and animals, miles of hiking trails, and five miles of equestrian trails open to the public year-round. China's response to U.S. tariffs includes imposing export restrictions on various rare earth elements, such as samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium and yttrium. This move highlights the perilous consequences of our heavy reliance on mineral imports. Despite domestic reserves, the U.S. depends almost entirely on imported rare earth elements, with many coming from China. To enhance national and economic security, we must immediately support the development of U.S. rare earth element projects and other mining projects where rare earths may be co-located with or recovered as part of the refining of other minerals.

  • In case you missed it, Senator Jim Risch of Idaho, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and a senior member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, recently published an insightful opinion piece in Newsweek emphasizing the critical need for the U.S. to prioritize domestic production of essential minerals The United States possesses substantial reserves of minerals vital to our national security, clean energy objectives, and technological progress. However, stringent regulations and procedural delays have led to a concerning dependence on foreign sources—particularly China—for materials that we can responsibly extract domestically. We commend recent federal initiatives aimed at reducing bureaucratic obstacles, prioritizing domestic mineral projects, and ensuring consistent long-term policies. Perpetua Resources' Stibnite Gold Project in Senator Risch's home state of Idaho, hosts the largest antimony reserve outside of China, highlights the pressing need to streamline permitting processes and expedite the availability of critical resources. Rebuilding our domestic mining and processing capabilities presents not only an economic opportunity but also a national security necessity. It is imperative that we take decisive action to secure supply chains, support responsible American projects, and reduce our reliance on geopolitical competitors. • In late March, U.S. Senators John Barrasso and John Hickenlooper reintroduced the bipartisan Mining Schools Act of 2025, a critical piece of legislation aimed at revitalizing America’s mining workforce and enhancing national energy security through investment in mining education. Initially introduced in May 2023 by Senator Barrasso and former Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, the bill received strong bipartisan support and passed the Senate last September. The updated 2025 version renews that commitment, addressing the urgent need to strengthen domestic mineral production and reduce America’s dependence on adversarial nations like China and Russia for essential natural resources. The Mining Schools Act of 2025 aims to establish a dedicated grant program for mining schools and higher education institutions across the country. These grants would support student recruitment, applied research, and demonstration projects related to mineral production—key steps toward building a modern, technically skilled workforce capable of meeting rising demand for minerals and traditional energy resources. The bill would also create a Mining Professional Development Advisory Board, which would evaluate grant applications, recommend recipients to the Secretary of Energy, and provide oversight to ensure the effective use of funds. This mechanism ensures accountability and alignment with the broader goal of strengthening domestic mineral production capacity. The Mining Schools Act of 2025 is cosponsored by a strong bipartisan coalition, including Senators Michael Bennet, John Curtis, Ruben Gallego, Jim Justice, Catherine Cortez Masto, John Hoeven, Mark Kelly, Mike Rounds, and Jacky Rosen. Strengthening domestic mining education is not just a workforce issue—it’s a national security and economic imperative. The Mining Schools Act provides the tools and support necessary to prepare the next generation of mining professionals and ensure the United States remains a global leader in responsible resource development. • Securing a domestic supply of critical minerals is vital for national security, economic growth, and the transition to alternative energy. Projects like Perpetua Resources' proposed Stibnite project and Bunker Hill Mining's fully permitted silver and zinc mine offer the U.S. a chance to produce critical minerals—such as antimony and zinc—under the highest environmental and labor standards. These projects will also generate jobs and attract billions in private investment to rural Idaho. By reducing dependence on foreign sources, particularly for minerals critical to defense, technology, and infrastructure, the U.S. can strengthen its supply chains and build a more resilient future—with Idaho positioned to play a foundational role. • Last week, The White House announced the appointment of David Copley as the senior official overseeing domestic mining policy within the newly established National Energy Dominance Council. With extensive experience in the mining sector, including his tenure at Newmont Corporation, Copley is well-equipped to drive permitting reforms, promote responsible resource development, and strengthen America’s mineral supply chains. As China continues to dominate critical mineral markets, the need for a cohesive federal mining strategy has never been more urgent. For years, U.S. mining policy has been fragmented across multiple agencies, leading to regulatory inefficiencies that hinder domestic production. By consolidating leadership and prioritizing permitting reform, this initiative marks a vital step toward securing Copper and other critical minerals essential for energy production, national security, and economic growth. We look forward to the progress under Copley’s leadership and to advancing a stronger, more secure domestic supply chain for the minerals that power America’s future. • The President's executive order, "Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production," leverages the Defense Production Act (DPA) to provide financing and support for new mining and processing projects. This initiative is designed to reduce reliance on foreign imports—particularly from China—while strengthening the nation's supply chains for critical materials with a particular focus on Copper. The order directs federal agencies to streamline permitting processes without compromising environmental protections. It prioritizes mineral production on federal lands and promotes public-private partnerships to accelerate the development of a secure, sustainable supply chain. As the demand for copper surges—driven by the rapid expansion of renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and advanced technologies—the White House’s focus on ramping up domestic copper production is both timely and strategic. Copper is essential for solar panels, wind turbines, EV batteries, and power infrastructure, making it a cornerstone of both energy independence and national security. Arizona stands at the epicenter of America’s copper production, accounting for approximately 70% of the nation’s total copper output, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Known as “The Copper State,” Arizona has a rich mining heritage and is home to several high-potential copper projects that could significantly reduce the U.S. reliance on imports. These projects are poised to play a vital role in advancing President Trump’s initiative: ✅ Resolution Copper – Currently in permitting, this project could eventually supply up to 25% of U.S. copper demand, making it one of the largest copper sources in North America. ✅ Arizona Sonoran Copper Company Inc. (ASCU:TSX | ASCUF:OTCQX) – Cactus Mine – A promising brownfield project advancing toward production, with strong potential to contribute to domestic supply. ✅ Hudbay Minerals Inc. – Copper World – A large-scale project with expansion potential, representing a significant domestic copper source. ✅ Florence Copper Project – Fully permitted and nearing commercial production. It is projected to produce 85 million pounds of copper annually, with a low environmental footprint. ✅ Faraday Copper Corp. – Copper Creek Project – Currently in exploration, this project holds strong potential with measured and indicated resources totaling over 3 billion pounds of copper, positioning it as a future contributor to Arizona’s copper dominance. ✅ Arizona Metals – Kay Mine Project – Located near Black Canyon City, Arizona, the Kay Mine Project is a high-grade copper-gold-zinc deposit currently in the exploration and drilling phase. Recent drill results indicate strong resource potential, positioning it as a promising future contributor to Arizona’s copper industry.
