Attending the conference and learning about the unique challenges hospital nursing leaders face across the state further fueled my commitment to expanding access to quality care through telemedicine. I’m thrilled to continue engaging with hospitals interested in expanding their community members’ access to healthcare by discussing our tele-hospitalist and tele-specialty services. What happens to White, Black, and Brown Rural America without Medicaid and Medicare? Simple: rural community collapses Let's understand who in rural America depends on these programs. MEDICARE [ ] Covers 20% of rural residents, mostly seniors. [ ] White: 86.8%, Black: 7.9%, Hispanic: 3.0%, Native American/Other: 2.3% [ ] Female: 56.5% Male: 43.5% MEDICAID & CHIP [ ] Covers 47% of children and 18% of adults in rural areas. [ ] White: 68%, Black: 12%, Hispanic: 14%, Native American/Other: 6% [ ] Female: 54.1% Male: 45.9% So what happens if Medicaid and Medicare disappear? [ ] Hospitals and clinics will close. [ ] Millions of rural kids will lose access to care. [ ] Seniors will have nowhere to go locally. [ ] Local economies will collapse because rural hospitals are often the largest employers in town. Yes, Medicaid and Medicare don’t pay providers well, and yes, they sometimes come with unnecessary red tape. But without them, rural healthcare doesn’t exist. If we’re going to talk about cost, let’s also talk about impact. If we're going to talk about cost, let's also talk about efficiency. Cutting cost or reimbursement is a simple terminology that leads to short-term gains (if any) with devastating long-term losses. Left or Center or Right. We can all agree that these programs need to be more efficient: operationally and clinically. So let's have a factual conversation without political bias because it impacts our elderly, the next generation, and the heart of America. Last year, together we opened the doors to Encompass Health rehab hospital in Madison, WI. Today, we’re treating nearly 40 patients daily—helping them recover from strokes, brain injuries, trauma, and more. The facility is state-of-the-art, but the team?
