What an awesome opportunity it was to bring my Illinois Institute of Technology / Kaplan Institute IPRO course students, who are developing battery recycling innovations, to Argonne National Laboratory earlier this week. 🔋♻️
The IPRO course, ”Sustainable Future: Innovations in Battery Recycling
” is one of our latest educational programs supporting battery workforce from our Sustainable Transportation Education and Partnerships (STEP) Department.
Students got to explore the lab’s . . .
✅ AURORA, one of the world’s first exascale supercomputers able to perform over a quintillion calculations per second, giving the global science community a powerful new research tool with unprecedented abilities for simulations, AI and data analysis.
✅ Cell Analysis, Modeling and Prototype (CAMP) Facility, which allows battery researchers to manufacture full-size prototype battery electrodes and cells.
✅ Electrochemical Analysis and Diagnostics Laboratory, which tests everything from small cells for consumer electronics to full-size EV batteries.
✅ Materials Engineering Research Facility (MERF), which develops economically viable processes for materials manufacturing at scale and produces detailed process descriptions for accurate cost modeling.
✅ ReCell Center, which grows an advanced battery recycling industry by developing economic and environmentally sound recycling processes that can be adopted by industry for lithium-ion and future battery chemistries.
✅ Smart Energy Plaza, which drives innovation in energy storage, EV infrastructure and grid integration to help shape future energy systems.
A big shoutout to Alison Dunlop, Marco Rodrigues, LeRoy Flores, Daniel Dobrzynski, Trevor Dzwiniel, Jeffrey Spangenberger and Christopher Knight for hosting us.
