A special thanks to everyone who came out and joined the BIW Employee Spirit Team (BEST) on Sunday for the BIW Easter Egg Hunt! A visit from the Easter Bunny and lots of colored eggs made the morning a little brighter despite the rain. A big thank you to our BEST team for making the weekend extra special for our BIW families. Last, a special thank you to Bowdoin College for shielding us from the rain at their Farley Field House!

Healthy Kids Day is coming up at the Bath Area Family YMCA! The event is free and will include open family swim time, bounce houses, climbing wall and fun family activities! You can also learn about the BIW childcare partnership and ask about whether your family would qualify for financial aid. Don't forget, BIW employees have a 10% discount on Bath YMCA memberships. Where & When? Bath Area Family YMCA on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Did you know? 💭 The 154-foot yacht Seapine holds the distinction of being the largest vessel built entirely indoors at BIW and of having two different owners before leaving the shipyard. Frank Goodyear ordered the yacht but passed away before its completion in 1931, so it was sold to a Mr. Hollander. Later, the yacht was renamed Rhodolite. It was purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served as a patrol ship off Hawaii during WWII. In the 1980s, Rhodolite was rebuilt. It is still in service today under the name Yanbu and is registered in the port of Southampton, England.

Learn about financial aid for childcare, available to BIW shipbuilders! BIW is excited to be partnering with the Bath Area YMCA on a new childcare facility in Brunswick that will support our shipbuilders. This facility at Farley Road, scheduled to open this September, will welcome 120 children into the YMCA’s nationally-accredited early childhood education program. To assist BIW parents with answering questions and navigating the enrollment process, the YMCA will be on-site in April to host Childcare Informational Sessions. The YMCA will present information about the program and current offerings, help answer questions about enrollment and provide information about financial assistance. Families who enroll in this program can apply for financial aid and scholarships through the YMCA as well as state programs like the Child Care Affordability Program (CCAP) to reduce the overall cost of tuition. See the schedule below to find a date and time that works for you. Sessions will be held on company time and a charge will be provided to those attending. Recently, Julie Berry, BIW’s CIO, met with the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute’s sophomore cohort (and a few juniors and seniors as well) at Boothbay Region High School. BIW’s Deb Arrington, Manager of Transformation, is one of the co-leaders of this group of girls. Julie shared her experience in developing as a leader and what has lead her to her current role today as a vice president at BIW and answered questions from the group. We hope these Olympia's Leaders will consider working at BIW in their future careers, too. The Institute works to raise the confidence and aspirations of high school girls across Maine at no cost to students, families, or schools.
