The CDC estimates that about 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Designated as #AutismAwarenessMonth, April is a time to recognize the unique challenges and contributions of people on the autism spectrum. This year, the caregivers at Bassett’s Cobleskill Health Center have taken up this cause with special passion. The team kicked off the month by wearing specially designed t-shirts on April 2, Autism Awareness Day. Thank you for your dedication and compassion! Testicular cancer is relatively rare, but it is the most common form of cancer seen in men between the ages of 15 and 34. Thankfully, it is also highly treatable if caught early. Let's get past the awkwardness and talk about it this #TesticularCancerAwareness Month! The most common warning sign is a change in how the testicle feels or looks, which could include a painful lump. Testicular cancer that has spread may cause stomach, lower back, or chest pain. Parkinson's disease impacts the part of the brain that controls the body's movements. A person with this disease could experience tremors, muscle rigidity, loss of balance, or changes in their speech, handwriting, walking pattern and posture. Approximately one million Americans have Parkinson's disease, the majority of whom are seniors. There is currently no cure, but medications or surgery can provide relief. #ParkinsonsDiseaseAwareness

Our K-9 security unit works hard and trains to keep our hospitals and health centers safe by rounding and checking on our caregivers, calmly diffusing tense situations, and detecting potential danger. Last week, DogWatch of Upstate NY, LLC, generously gifted each of our K-9 teams with medic kits full of more than 90 items that can be used in an emergency. We appreciate their incredible generosity! Workplace Eye Wellness Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to evaluate what you're doing while you're on the clock to protect your ocular health. 🖥️ If you work in an office or on a computer, take breaks to avoid digital eye strain. Consider the 20-20-20 rule, which recommends looking 20 feet away from your screen for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. Make sure you are sitting at least an arms-length away from your screen. 🥽 If you work in construction, manufacturing, or another industry where there is a higher risk of workplace accidents, always be sure to wear appropriate eye protection. 💧Eye drops can be helpful if you find yourself struggling with dry eye discomfort. If you're unsure which kind is right for you, your Bassett eye care provider can recommend types and brands, many of which are available over the counter.

We appreciate our network's social workers! March is Social Work Month, a time to celebrate and learn about this these deeply compassionate professionals. Bassett's social workers complete a wide variety of tasks, all benefiting our patients. Some of their responsibilities include helping patients in need access resources, coordinating care between different providers, planning a patient's discharge from the hospital so that they set up for success, and providing emotional support to families during difficult medical situations. Some of our social workers are also trusted caregivers at our long-term care facilities and counselors at our School-Based Health Centers, where they provide mental health services to students. Their contributions make such a difference and we thank them for all of their hard work! #SocialWorkMonth
