Bucha, Ukraine, and Sandy, Utah, Announce Sister City Partnership Amid Growing Utah-Kyiv Region Ties In a historic move aimed at fostering international friendship and solidarity, the city of Sandy, Utah, and Bucha, Ukraine, have officially established a sister-city relationship. The partnership was announced on March 17, highlighting a commitment to cultural exchange, economic cooperation, and humanitarian support. Bucha, a city near Kyiv, became globally recognized following the devastation it endured during Russia’s war against Ukraine. Sandy, a thriving suburb of Salt Lake City, is known for its strong community values and active international outreach programs. City leaders from both communities emphasized the significance of the partnership. Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski stated: “You can see Ukrainian flags flying all around our city. Sandy supports Ukraine, and with so much turmoil, uncertainty, and chaos in the world today, we can’t lose sight of that. It is really the person-to-person connection that is the seed of great relationships, the seed of love, and the seed of democracy.” Bucha’s mayor, Anatoliy Fedoruk, welcomed the new partnership, saying, “The cities of Bucha and Sandy are embarking on a new journey together, and we believe it will be meaningful and inspiring. Despite the distance, we are confident that we will bring many projects to life, working hand in hand for a brighter future”.  The sister city agreement will include cultural exchanges, business collaborations, and educational initiatives aimed at fostering understanding between the two communities. Additionally, Sandy has pledged to support humanitarian efforts in Bucha, including aid for rebuilding projects and assistance for war-affected families. Expanding Utah-Ukraine Relations This sister city agreement is part of a broader initiative to strengthen ties between the state of Utah and Ukraine. Over the past years, Utah officials have been actively working with Ukrainian counterparts to establish economic, humanitarian, and educational partnerships. The event follows the visits of a state delegation to Ukraine led by Utah Senate President Adams in May 2023 and President of Ukraine Zelensky to Salt Lake City in July 2024, and is a part of the development of sister-state relations between Utah and the Kyiv region.  City Council member Ryan Mecham and Mayor Zoltanski were instrumental in establishing the sister-city relationship. The city worked with August Mission, a humanitarian organization in #Ukraine, and Dell Loy and Julie Hansen’s Hansen Ukrainian Mission.

  • Op-Ed in Deseret News by August Mission CEO Bruce Roberts: International assistance safeguards American values

Deploying money is part of our soft power strategy. It's simplistic to just see it as giving money away. What we are (or should be) actually doing is creating stability and improving quality of life where it is needed. People who are desperate have nothing to lose, this is dangerous. When you help people attain a standard of living and some wealth (just a tiny bit by American standards) they are encouraged to continue this trend and provide opportunity for their families and community. This contributes to regional stability, which means less conflict and more trade. This is good for everyone. PhD of Law, the Director of the Vinnytsia Regional Development Agency

Ukraine - USA: a partnership that works My acquaintance with America began before I travelled overseas. In 2022, when Vinnytsia was hosting thousands of internally displaced people, representatives of the August Mission visited us with humanitarian aid. Later, their founder, Bruce Roberts, brought a trade delegation from Utah to introduce American business to Ukraine's opportunities. It was a pleasure to meet him again in Washington at Ukraine Week and discuss new joint projects! Another important step is the signing of a Memorandum with Humanity Builders in Washington! In 2023, we started working with Paul Ritacco, one of the founders of Humanity Builders. This organisation helps kindergartens in Vinnytsia region by providing their canteens with modern equipment. On 5 February in Washington, together with the Vinnytsia Regional Council, we formalised our cooperation by signing an official agreement. This opens up new opportunities for community development and continues the initiatives we have already started. 🇺🇦 Every meeting in the United States means new contacts, prospects and acquaintances: ✅ Congressmen and senators who not only support Ukraine but also clearly understand its needs. The Open World Ukraine programme, which builds bridges between our countries thanks to people committed to Ukraine, such as Lewis Madanick, whose ancestors come from Kopayhorod and Shepetivka. ✅The German Marshall Fund of the United States and Pact are organisations that have been active in Ukraine for years, and we believe that their activities will soon resume. 🤝 Partnership is not only about helping, but also about working together. We have a lot to work on, and I am sure that these meetings will turn into concrete projects that will contribute to the development of our communities!

  • Utah Non-Profit Day on the Hill! We spent yesterday morning at Utah’s capitol connecting with other Utah based nonprofits who are looking to make a difference throughout the state, country and the world. We are amazed at all of the incredible organizations serving the world’s communities and are so grateful for their support as well as the support of our Utah legislature. Help us continue to spread awareness for those being affected by the war in Ukraine, and don’t forget to sign up for our email list on the website to stay updated!
