Prior to last night’s game, we announced that our very own forward Larry Nance Jr. has been honored with the Jason Collier Memorial Award for the 2024-25 season. The annual award recognizes the Hawks player who embodies the spirit of community engagement exemplified by the late Atlanta center who passed away in 2005. Nance joins a distinguished list of recipients as the 18th player to receive this accolade. Throughout this season, he participated in events like the Million Meal Pack, where he helped pack more than a million meals, and assisted with the APS March Race2Read Challenge, promoting literacy among students and families. “I am truly honored to receive the Jason Collier Memorial Award,” said our Hawks forward Larry Nance Jr. “The city of Atlanta welcomed me with open arms, and I wanted to make sure that they knew that I was not only going to play hard for this organization but pay it forward and make a positive impact off of the court and in the community.” Our 6-8 forward has made a significant impact in the community through his engagement with issues related to chronic disease, food insecurity, and homelessness. In addition to his work with the Crohn’s community, Nance has dedicated his time to addressing homelessness through his involvement with Love Beyond Walls (LBW). “On behalf of my family, I would like to congratulate Larry as the recipient of the Jason Collier Memorial Award for this season,” said Katie Collier. “Larry’s involvement and dedication to the Atlanta community and beyond is truly impactful. Further, Larry’s work is an inspiring example of keeping Jason’s legacy and passion to serve alive.” Read the full press release: https://lnkd.in/ef8EFzuC

Together with Chase, we came together to empower 10 rookie entrepreneurs through a series of educational workshops focused on financial literacy and understanding finances. The event included a surprise fireside chat with our very own Onyeka Okongwu, who spoke with the entrepreneurs on their career and financial journeys. Following the chat, Onyeka revealed that our organizations would donate $2,500 to each small business, offering further support for their ongoing growth and development. The diverse group of entrepreneurs represented a wide range of industries, from clothing and apparel to event planning. Earlier today, we hosted a pep rally to celebrate Heritage Academy as the top-performing elementary school in Atlanta Public Schools March 'Race2Read' Challenge, a district-wide initiative aimed at closing the literacy gap by encouraging students to read, while recognizing schools with the highest levels of participation. For the month of March, Heritage Academy stood out as the top performer, achieving 100 percent student participation and logging over 244,000 minutes. The event honored the top three classrooms and top three individual readers and awarded the school with a donation to enhance its media center with additional literacy resources. Students had a blast at the lively celebration, with appearances from our Hawks Entertainment, including Harry the Hawk, ATL Dancers, and Flight Crew. “We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievement of Heritage Academy and all of the students who participated in the Race2Read Challenge,” said our very own Vice President of Community Impact and Basketball Programs, Jon Babul. “Literacy is a cornerstone of success, and we are committed to supporting programs that inspire and empower young learners to develop a lifelong love for reading, build self-confidence, and unlock their full potential.” “The Race2Read Challenge at Heritage Academy was an exhilarating journey that ignited a passion for reading across our entire school community,” said Heritage Academy Principal, Trennis Harvey. “We also extend our congratulations to all the schools and students in Atlanta Public Schools who participated—this challenge was a testament to the power of literacy and the joy of reading. We are proud not just of our Heritage Academy scholars but of every student and staff member in APS who took part in this incredible initiative!” Read the full press release: https://lnkd.in/g9W_VaTU

On Saturday, in celebration of Women’s History Month, our Lady Hawks collaborated with Becca’s Closet Greater Atlanta to host our third annual ‘Say Yes to the Prom Dress’ event at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. At the event, nearly 40 underprivileged teens from local Atlanta high schools selected from a variety of free prom dresses, shoes, and accessories and received hair and makeup tips from local vendors to prepare for their upcoming prom day. Members of the Lady Hawks, volunteers from our Hawks staff and members of Shamea Shares were on site at the event. The event aimed to enhance self-esteem and promote inner beauty by providing students with everything they need to feel confident and empowered on their special day. “I’m grateful to Becca’s Closet Greater Atlanta and our local vendors for helping us create lasting memories for these teens,” said our very own Principal Owner, Jami Gertz. “It feels great to put a smile on their faces and inspire confidence they will carry with them well beyond prom night. This event is always a highlight of our season.” “Becca’s Closet Greater Atlanta is thrilled to partner with the Lady Hawks to help make one of the most memorable nights of students' lives possible,” said Tiffany Cadogan, Becca’s Closet Greater Atlanta Chapter Organization. “We know parents and students have a lot on their plates, and we're grateful to offer them peace of mind when it comes to prom night. For the past 14 years, we've had the privilege of witnessing the joy and relief that comes when students ring the bell and choose the perfect dress.” Read the full press release: https://lnkd.in/ecCEXssY
