“We need service members who are warfighters first, whether they're integrating friendly or coalition capabilities, conducting electromagnetic warfare, or jamming to interdict adversary satellite communications. Army space professionals, and space professionals at large, are not doing space effects just to do them – whether it’s a decisive operation or shaping operation, I need those individuals to provide an effect synchronized with lethal and nonlethal capabilities to give me an advantage.” ~Col. Felix Torres, commandant, Space and Missile Defense Center of Excellence, #ArmySMDC #SpaceSymposium

The ballistic missile defense facilities comprising four silos housing two interceptor missiles at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California – home to the 100th Missile Defense Brigade’s Detachment 1 – are formally renamed the Ronald W. Reagan Missile Defense Site, April10, 2006. During the ceremony, LTG Henry "Trey" Obering, director of the Missile Defense Agency; former First Lady Nancy Reagan; and Riki Ellison, founder and president of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance unveiled a bronze bust of President Ronald Reagan and a bronze plaque. The bust by sculptor Lawrence Heyda would later be displayed on an 11-foot-high limestone pedestal in a memorial designed by architect Bob Woods. Other key dignitaries in attendance included Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England, Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, former California Gov. Pete Wilson, and LTG Frank G. Klotz, vice commander of Air Force Space Command. The speeches focused on the president’s legacy to national defense during the Cold War. Obering noted that President Reagan “called upon the scientific community in our country, those who gave us nuclear weapons, to turn their great talents now to the cause of mankind and world peace, to give us the means of rendering these nuclear weapons impotent and obsolete." The ceremony concluded with a broadcast of President Reagan’s own words from a speech given on March 23, 1983, the text of which is featured on the bronze plaque beneath the bust of the president. “Wouldn’t it be better to save lives than avenge them?" the president asked. "Are we not capable of demonstrating our peaceful intentions by applying all of our abilities and our ingenuity to achieving a truly lasting stability? I think we are indeed. Indeed, we must.” The memorial, which was completed in 2008, is located at the Del Puente viewing site. #TBT

Nationwide, April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, and this year's theme - “STEP FORWARD. Prevent. Report. Advocate.” - highlights the importance of all individuals using their personal and collective strength to advance meaningful change in preventing and responding to sexual violence. We all play a critical role in strengthening the command climate by engaging in behaviors that protect others and in supporting one another to achieve personal and professional success. #SAAPM2025

The Maneuver Fires Integrated Experiment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, April 3-17, 2017, conducts testing on the Mobile Expeditionary High Energy Laser 2.0 against a series of unmanned targets. An improvement over the previous system, MEHEL 2.0 "[included] on-board radar, a second optic, increased laser power and increased engagement range." The 5-kW laser was mounted on a Stryker armored vehicle and operated by Soldiers from the 12th Field Artillery under the direction of CPT Theo Kleinsorge. A key goal for the research team was to incorporate Soldiers in the demonstration exercise to assess the feasibility of the technology. During the exercise, the team successfully intercepted 50+ targets including quad copters, hexcopters and remote-control planes. “We were skeptical at first, when we were first briefed we’d be shooting down drones with lasers. ... We achieved a success rate well beyond what we expected we’d have, and we are excited to see this go to the next step of the experiment,” said Kleinsorge. #TBT
