This month we honor Veronika Fairchild. Veronica tells her story, from her first memory of having to wear a yellow star on her coat, to fleeing in the middle of the night to Budapest. She bravely shares memories of things she should have never seen and reveals that her family was able to escape the holocaust by converting to Catholicism. Converting allowed them to get papers that kept them out of concentration camps. Her family eventually landed in America in 1956 and Veronika avoided talking about the Holocaust, keeping the dark past to herself. Many years later while at Calvary Hospital, she decided to share her story and work through the impact it had on her life. Lost somewhere between her Jewish heritage and Catholic faith, the community Calvary Hospital was able to help bring her healing. Chaplain Helen Odell and Rabbi Rachmiel Rothberger provided the opportunity for her to see and touch a special Czechoslovakian Torah scroll that also survived the war. Rabbi Rothberger shared that her experience with that central piece of the Jewish faith “helped her release the shackles of fear that the Holocaust had created for her and break free in her journey and reconnect to Judaism.” Veronika said. “I feel like I got part of myself back here. There’s so much love and care around. At Calvary, I feel that scaredness went away, that I could be myself.” Veronika passed away on August 28th, 2024.
