  • In celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are proud to recognize the extraordinary contributions of African Americans who broke through barriers and paved the way for modern advancements in the fields of chemistry and clean energy. To #inspire future chemists, engineers, inventors and educators, we are shining a light on a few among a long list of #trailblazers throughout history: ⚡ Granville T. Woods (1856 – 1910), Inventor and Engineer Woods was an inventor and engineer who made great strides in renewable energy, sustainability and electrification in the United States. Woods’ career as an inventor began in 1872 as an engineer for the Ohio and Mississippi Railway. He worked on a variety of projects related to electricity and renewable energy, including an electric railway system, electrical motors and improved telegraphs. In 1884, Woods created a device that combined several elements of telegraphy and telephony, which he called the “induction telegraph,” paving the way for widespread telephone use. The induction telegraph was the foundation for Woods’ most important invention: the third rail. This device allowed electric power to be transmitted through a third rail that ran alongside the tracks of an electric railway system. His invention revolutionized the industry by making it possible to generate electricity without burning coal, thus reducing emissions and making renewable energy more accessible. 🔬 St. Elmo Brady (1884 – 1966), Chemist and Educator The first African American to earn a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Brady’s research focused on how the acidity of carboxylic acids changed based on the addition of different chemical groups. He taught for several years at what would eventually be called Tuskegee University and later became the chair of the chemistry department at Howard University. Several years later, Brady returned to Fisk University, where he had earned his undergraduate degree, to create the nation’s first graduate program in chemistry at a historically Black college and eventually did the same at three other universities. In 2019, the American Chemical Society honored Brady with a National Historic Chemical Landmark. 🌿 Winifred Burks-Houck (1950 – 2004), Chemist, Environmental Protection & Worker Safety Winifred Burks-Houck was an environmental organic chemist and the first woman president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), serving from 1993 to 2001. Burks-Houck was born in Anniston, Alabama, in 1950 and is the great, great, great granddaughter of abolitionist Harriet Tubman. She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Dillard University and her master’s in organic chemistry at Atlanta University. In 1983, Burks-Houck joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, working as an environmental chemist on environmental protection projects with an interest in ensuring worker safety. #ArcadiumLithium National Society of Black Engineers

🔋✨ #NemaskaLithium #OnRechargeNosBatteries
