Last week, Anzu Partners' Investment Principal Henk Both and Investment Director Wilson Poole attended the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit in Washington, DC, where innovators, policy experts, and investors gathered to explore how American companies will continue to shape the future of energy. Anzu’s portfolio was represented by executives from Niron Magnetics, Inc., South 8 Technologies, and AM Batteries . Niron Magnetics’ CTO Frank Johnson and VP Tom Grainger were both featured speakers, sharing how Niron is the only company capable of manufacturing rare-earth-free magnets to support the DOE’s longstanding mission of American resource independence. (China controls 90%+ of the world’s rare earth metals and magnets!) $100M of just-announced financing — with more to come this summer! Key takeaways from discussions at our networking event co-hosted with TDK Ventures: 1️⃣ Data centers are driving energy discussions: The Watt-bit spread (Brian Janous) is significantly accelerating investment into areas critical for computational throughput, particularly AI inference—covering baseload power, battery storage, compute efficiency, power electronics, cooling technologies, and infrastructure. Notably, efficiency gains compound demand growth, evidenced by recent successes like EnCharge AI’s $100M Series B and Xendee’s commercial ramp. 2️⃣ Geothermal is gaining momentum: Geothermal offers attractive 24/7 baseload power from domestic resources with zero emissions, particularly suited for data centers and industrial applications. Nuclear energy also benefits, but geothermal uniquely expands our toolkit at a compelling cost structure. Watch this space closely—especially for upcoming developments from XGS Energy. 3️⃣ Hydrogen is out (for now): Electrolyzers were notably absent from summit conversations. Natural gas hydrogen ($1–2/kg) remains by far the most economical feedstock for ammonia, refining, and chemicals—the vast majority of hydrogen demand. Achieving electrolytic hydrogen at $1/kg feels economically unrealistic, given baseload PPAs currently clearing around $110–115/MWh (e.g., MSFT-CEG Three Mile Island). Perhaps investors are starting to revisit fundamental mass balance economics, or maybe attention is simply shifting toward the next hype cycle. #EnergyInnovation #ARPAESummit #NironMagnetics #CleanEnergy #Sustainability
