  • March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! Colon cancer causes nearly 50,000 deaths in the U.S. every year; however up to 90% of colon and rectal cancers can be prevented through lifestyle changes and early detection, often long before any symptoms appear. Doctors encourage you to get colorectal screenings at age 45. This month, choose to join the Anti-Cancer Challenge and help spread awareness on the importance of colon health and screenings. • 🌟 This #FeatureFriday, we're highlighting Tyler Butorac, a #cancer survivor and an extraordinary participant in the 2024 UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge! In June 2022, Tyler's life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia after experiencing unexpected swelling in his leg. This diagnosis led him to take leave from his job and begin treatment at UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. There, he found the support he needed from his physician and dedicated medical team during this challenging time. Over the course of two years, Tyler underwent a bone marrow transplant and completed his treatment. His physician soon invited him to join the Anti-Cancer Challenge after recognizing his passion for cycling. With determination, he rallied his friends to join the cause and participated in the 14-mile ride just a few months after completing his treatment. Tyler raised over $1,600 for cancer research, transforming his personal battle into a powerful force for good. "I plan to participate and scale up to the 35-mile ride in 2025. Hopefully, generating even more funds in the process," Tyler expressed. Now in recovery, Tyler is pursuing a new goal of earning a degree in computer science. 💙 By sharing his journey and the progress he has made, he aims to inspire others and offer hope to those facing similar battles. • 📢 Michael Demetriou, MD, PhD, has been awarded $4.6 million by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to advance studies of a novel immunotherapy that holds the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment by targeting all major cancer types. The grant for $4,581,144 was awarded to accelerate his lab’s groundbreaking work on genetically modified chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells that can destroy tumors by attacking abnormal complex sugar chains called glycans found on the surface of all major cancer cell types. His glycans research was awarded a pilot project grant from the UC Irvine Anti-Cancer Challenge back in 2017! 🙌 Thank you to all our supporters for helping to advance innovative #cancerresearch!

UC Irvine neuroscientist Dr. Michael Demetriou received a $4.6 million grant to advance research on a novel therapy that could revolutionize #cancer treatment by uniquely targeting all major cancer types. "This technology has the potential to shift the paradigm for cellular immunotherapy of cancer, extending the benefits for the first time to solid tumors like breast, prostate, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer,” added Dr. Richard Van Etten, director of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. 🌍 Today is World Cancer Day. At UC Irvine, we’re advancing groundbreaking cancer research – thanks to philanthropy. Early-stage funding fuels promising studies like STOPGAP, a Phase 2 clinical trial led by Dr. Maheswari Senthil and Dr. Farshid Dayyani at UCI Health. Their innovative approach is targeting gastric carcinomatosis, a deadly form of stomach cancer. 🔬 Research like this wouldn’t be possible without support. Every gift helps accelerate discoveries that change lives. Watch how philanthropy powers the fight against cancer. 🎥👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gVftHgUi
