Twenty years ago, Ames Construction and its Zumbro River Constructors joint venture partners were set to begin the TH 212 Design-Build project in Minnesota. The project constructed a 12-mile, four-lane freeway corridor spanning three suburban communities in the Twin Cities west metro. This was a “full circle” moment for Ames: Nearly 40 years earlier, Ames was awarded its first-ever state highway contract to grade a different segment of Highway 212. The METRO Gold Line is open! Ames Construction delivered the Gold Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project under budget and ahead of schedule for the Metropolitan Council in Minnesota. Community members came out on a chilly March morning for a party that included free rides, food trucks, and live music. They were joined by Met Council Chair Charlie Zelle, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, Woodbury Mayor Anne Burt, and other government and community partners in celebrating the new line. For this project, Ames constructed a dedicated road for buses plus bridges, underpasses, and 16 stations. The 10-mile route from Woodbury to downtown St. Paul is the state’s first BRT line operating primarily on bus-only lanes.
