About us

UDOT’s vision is as simple and straightforward as our name. We aim to Keep Utah Moving. That includes everything from improving our roads and traffic lights to providing alternate means of getting from A to B, like bike lanes and public transit. We want to make sure that whatever is being moved, freight and cargo or the people in a vehicle, arrives safe and promptly. It isn’t easy, but Keeping Utah Moving is what keeps UDOT going.

  • The sky’s the limit when it comes to Utah’s future. Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is going to transform how we connect, travel, and grow. To put it simply: AAM is the future of air travel beyond just airplanes. Imagine a small electric aircraft (kind of like a big drone) picking people up and flying them to their destinations. It’s not just for travel, though. AAM will also help deliver packages faster, bring medical supplies to remote areas, and even assist in emergencies. These aircraft are designed to be quiet, efficient, and able to take off and land almost anywhere. Our latest Aeronautics Economic Study details how AAM will shape the future, improving travel, connectivity, and access for all Utahns. What it could mean for Utah: 🚑 Faster emergency response 🏥 Better access for rural communities 🚦 Reduced congestion in cities 🏔️ More accessible recreation and tourism The details may be nerdy (aeronautics folks, this one’s for you), but the impact will be important for everyone. • A simple light can make a life-saving difference. That’s why we're installing these under-mast lights at intersections across Utah, shining a spotlight exactly where pedestrians roll, jog, or walk across the street. So far, we’ve installed about 150 under-mast lights statewide, with new installations in Ogden and St. George just this past week. Smart, simple innovations like this are part of our ongoing work to make Utah’s roads safer for everyone. 🤝 #TeamUDOT #Utah #infrastructure

  • "I can truthfully say, I love my job!!!" Meet Chris, a Roadway Safety Specialist with our Incident Management Team. Before joining UDOT, Chris worked as a welder. But when he saw the benefits (the literal benefits) and opportunities with the department, he made the switch and never looked back. Now, every day brings something unexpected, and that’s exactly how he likes it. Whether it’s helping a stranded motorist, keeping highways clear, or watching a UHP trooper try to herd a flock of ducks like they’re cattle, there’s never a dull moment. But for Chris, the best part of the job isn’t just the surprises—it’s the people. He’s helped countless Utahns on some of their worst days, getting them safely off the highway and back on their way. And when he’s not out making Utah’s roads safer, you’ll find him welding or building (and then wrecking) scale radio-controlled cars and trucks. Chris is one of the 1,800 dedicated members of #TeamUDOT. Stick around and get to know more of the incredible people working behind the scenes to make Utah a better place. #MeetTheTeam

We spent last week flying across the state of Utah with our partners, conducting flight and ground operations at UPS’ Salt Lake City ramp, and demonstrating potential cargo and passenger routes with 47GUtah Department of Transportation, and Utah Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity as we work to stand up an AAM ecosystem in the state. It was a week filled with awesome people, gorgeous views, and easy flying. "These demonstrations are more than just a technology showcase — they represent a fundamental shift in how we think about mobility,” said Carlos Braceras, Executive Director of UDOT “There’s an opportunity ahead of the Olympics for Utah to lead the nation in Advanced Air Mobility. To be put on the map in a whole new way.” — Aaron Starks, CEO and President of 47G. This technology will unlock so much economic and logistical opportunity for residents and businesses — for the 2034 Olympics, and in the years leading up to it.

    View profile for Paul Damron

Advanced Air Mobility Manager at Utah Division of Aeronautics

Utah Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics had the distinct privilege of hosting the two-day AAM Multi-State Collaborative, now consisting of 36 states. The event fostered in-depth, productive discussions that were both meaningful and forward-thinking. Day 1 focused on key topics such as harmonizing AAM policies, defining the roles of states in AAM development, enhancing both physical and digital infrastructure, and setting priorities for emerging aviation systems. Day 2 featured four hours of industry-driven dialogue, addressing critical issues such as infrastructure requirements, operational support states can offer, the creation of sustainable funding models, and the growing demand for AAM. These discussions are always an invaluable investment of my time and energy. Each state and industry participant contributed valuable perspectives and shared the challenges they’re navigating as they collaborate on building a comprehensive framework for AAM. #AAM #Utah

  • Nothing slows a snowplow down like a red light — and in a storm, every second counts. That’s why we’re upgrading 100 more snowplows with V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology this year. These small but powerful devices (pictured below) let plows “talk” to traffic signals, keeping and turning lights green so plows can keep moving and clear roads faster. And it’s not just for snowplows. This same technology also helps emergency vehicles and Utah Transit Authority buses get more green lights. By making our existing infrastructure work smarter, we’re helping Utahns get where they need to go more safely and efficiently. This is just one example of how V2X technology is paving the way for safer transportation for everyone. #TeamUDOT #V2X #Utah #ConnectedVehicles

  • Last week, we joined students from across Utah at the Ken Garff Esports Spring Celebration — a day all about esports, STEM, and hands-on learning. 😎 From a Lego building competition to heavy equipment simulators, our team had a blast connecting with future innovators and showing how technology and transportation go hand in hand. These events are a great way to support education and inspire the next generation to explore careers in STEM, technology, and beyond. Thanks to everyone who made it a day to remember! #TeamUDOT
