Today we are excited to present our first episode of Foresight, an Alphapointe series that shows what it's like to live - and thrive - with vision loss. This first episode tells the inspiring story of a weightlifter, husband, father, and Alphapointe employee Romia Hall, and how he overcame his sudden blindness and used that adversity to become the man he is. Let's talk business. As a nonprofit, we have a mission focused on people who are blind and visually impaired. Serving them, employing them, helping them succeed and live life independently. But Alphapointe is also a business. We make a wide array of products. We have professional services that help support companies and organizations of all sizes. We hold a handful of patents on groundbreaking tactical/medical gear. And, surprisingly, we produce over 100 million products each year in Kansas City, Missouri, and Queens, New York. Products like our wax pencil. It seems like such a simple product. But it works. Well, in fact. And it helps employ people who face an incredibly high rate of unemployment. When clients first walk through the doors of Alphapointe, they often carry a mix of uncertainty and hope. Many are unsure of how they'll regain their independence or re-enter the workforce after vision loss. At Alphapointe, our mission is to turn that uncertainty into confidence. A key part of that journey is the support provided by our Job Placement Specialist, Martin Callen. Martin works one-on-one with clients who are ready to take the next step toward employment. He helps them craft professional resumes, sharpen their interview skills, and build the confidence they need to pursue job opportunities with purpose and pride. Two recent success stories, Hazeline and Elvis, show just how that support helps. Hazeline is now a receptionist at H&R Block through the remainder of the tax season, after which she will begin her training as a tax associate while Elvis will be providing remote tech support for an IT company. One where they can provide for their families, contribute meaningfully to the economy, and live the way they want. For more than 100 years, that has been our purpose. To serve as a catalyst for people who are blind and visually impaired. And to produce products of enduring quality so that our partners can succeed, grow, and make a difference of their own. You might not know that Alphapointe has a location in Queens, New York, where a wide variety of janitorial products are produced. Everything from microfiber mops, street brooms and dustpans to mop buckets, wet floor signs and much more. All of it being produced by people who are visually impaired or blind. These quality products are being sold to agencies such as the DOE (Department of Education), the NYCHA, (New York City Housing Authority, the largest housing authority in North America), as well as the Department of City Wide Service Administration, which services many buildings and facilities in New York. “When I tell people the story behind our products and the people producing them, their minds are blown,” says Ted Rios, Senior Manager of Major Accounts at Alphapointe. When you see a mop keeping the halls of schools clean, one of our street brooms sweeping up after the New Years celebration in Times Square, or even one of our micro fiber mops in the White House, you are not just seeing a high quality product in a high profile setting, but you are seeing the visually impaired or blind person whose job it was to put it there. You see an opportunity being provided to someone with vision loss so they can be independent, support their families, and contribute to the community.
