Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss
About us
Our Mission: The American Foundation for the Blind creates equal opportunities and expands possibilities through advocacy, thought leadership, and strategic partnerships. Who We Are: Since 1921, AFB has been a leader in expanding possibilities for the nearly 25 million Americans living with vision loss. A national nonprofit with offices in five U.S. cities, we champion access and equality and stand at the forefront of new technologies and evidence-based advocacy. We address the most pressing needs of people with vision loss and their families, breaking down societal barriers and promoting broad systemic change. Like Helen Keller, AFB's most famous ambassador, we are committed to creating a more equitable world for people with disabilities. Our Action Plan: AFB cultivates in-depth knowledge that improves understanding of issues affecting children and adults who are blind or visually impaired, to facilitate meaningful change that fosters equality and inclusion.

Did you know? The number of American adults (ages 18 and up) living with vision loss grew from an estimated 50.2 million in 2022 to 51.9 million in 2023—an increase of roughly 1.7 million people in just one year. That’s a 3.4% rise year-over-year, made up entirely of adults experiencing mild difficulty seeing. You can find this data and much more in AFB’s recently updated Statistical Snapshots, your go-to source for the latest facts, figures, and resources about vision loss in the U.S. Whether you’re looking for key statistics or in-depth information on blindness and visual impairment, Statistical Snapshots provides the answers you need. It is updated regularly and based on the most current research. Find AFB’s Statistical Snapshots at www.afb.org/statistics.

AI is being integrated into our lives everywhere including in higher education and the accessibility of these tools and systems needs to be carefully considered. I am so excited to have contributed to this paper Where AI Meets Accessibility: Considerations for Higher Education which was just published by Teach Access in collaboration with Every Learner Everywhere. Shout out to my colleagues the American Foundation for the Blind who contributed to this work Sarahelizabeth Baguhn, Sarah Malaier, and Arielle Silverman! Please take a look at this to learn more about accessibility and AI in higher education and the challenges individuals with disabilities face. This provides valuable information for educators about how to implement these tools in ways that support all students. https://lnkd.in/eYy628PE
