One of the main driving forces of hemodiafiltration relies on the higher total dialytic dose delivered that includes total ultrafiltration volume, namely the convective dose, that increases and extends the molecular weight spectrum of uremic compounds removed with hemodiafiltration. In this presentation, the main factors that condition performances of hemodiafiltration include blood flow, dialyzer design, and surface area, substitution and ultrafiltration flow, dialysate flow, anticoagulation, and treatment time will be revisited. In addition, technical options and features of HDF machines facilitating the achievement of targets and their impact on water and dialysis fluid saving will be discussed. Finally, the impact on selected and clinically relevant solute clearances (urea, phosphate, and B2M), and solute kinetic and circulating levels control will be analyzed. By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to understand what differs between hemodiafiltration and high flux hemodialysis, why it is important to fine-tune hemodiafiltration prescription and what are the targets to achieve to provide full benefits to patients. Contacts Hours: Nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and allied health professionals may obtain up to 1.0 contact hours for attending this webinar. 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits are available for physicians.
