🚚 𝗔𝗜𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗌𝘂𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗊𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗌𝗻𝘁𝗵! ⚠ Hazardous materials aren't just found in industrial settings, they're all around us.   As fire protection and life safety experts at ACS Group, we feel it’s our responsibility to highlight the importance of not only recognizing hazards, but also safely managing hazardous materials in our everyday environment.      𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗌𝗳 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝗌𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗎 𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗌𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲. The Great Toronto Fire leveled nearly 20 acres of the city’s commercial district, destroying around 100 buildings.    The exact cause of the fire was never determined, but it spread quickly, tearing through the town leaving massive destruction in its wake.  𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗞𝗱𝗌𝘄𝗻 𝗌𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗌 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗌𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗌 𝗰𝗌𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗎𝗲𝘀:    𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗞𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁    • Flames were first detected in the elevator shaft of a factory in central downtown.   • The undetermined, but suspected cause was faulty wiring or an unattended stove.   • Strong gusts of wind fueled the flames, causing the fire to spread quickly.   • It took 9 hours and more than 250 firefighters to put out the fire.     𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗌𝗻 & 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗌𝗻    • Nearly 20 acres and roughly 100 buildings destroyed; 220 businesses affected.   • Over $10 million (in 1904 dollars) in financial losses.   • Estimate 5,000 people left unemployed.   • Only one reported casualty (a week after the fire, during cleanup).   𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗊𝗜𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗊𝗌 𝗀𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗞𝗹𝘆   • Building structures with wooden interiors, open stairwells, few firewalls, and no sprinklers   • Combustible window & roofing materials accelerated the fire.   • Low water pressure and tangled overhead wires hindered firefighting efforts. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗌𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗌𝗻 𝗊𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗌𝗺 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗎𝗲𝗱𝘆  • Stricter building codes were introduced, requiring fire-resistant construction.   • Mandatory installation of more sprinkler systems in new and existing buildings.   • A high-pressure water system was installed to improve firefighting capabilities.   • The fire department expanded, increasing resources and readiness.     These changes emphasized the importance of ongoing investment in fire protection and city infrastructure, laying the foundation for a safer, more resilient Toronto. The city’s ability to rebuild and thrive is a direct result of lessons learned and updated safety standards after the fire.    As a #fireprotection and #lifesafety consulting firm, we want to take a moment to reflect on this event and encourage awareness and commitment to #firesafety. Together, we can continue to drive advancements in fire prevention and emergency preparedness to protect lives and communities.    𝗠𝗌𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗌𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗌𝗿𝗌𝗻𝘁𝗌 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗌𝗳 𝟭𝟵𝟬𝟰 | Source: City of Toronto  ➡  https://lnkd.in/gMa4FeSR
