Meetings are like rock&roll: the audience sees three minutes but the band spent 33 minutes woodshedding that one song.
We did December 1 on 1s with everyone on the Accunet Mortgage | NMLS #255368 team this week. A couple thoughts:
1. Prep: Even for a 25 minute conversation, the time to be ready and not-tap-dancing for that is at least 2x (probably more). If it sounds like your leader is playing jazz, they are.
2. Go small. Avoid the trap to try to fix it all in one meeting. Leaders are in the relationship business. Not the fix-it business. You’re in the people business. Small and meaningful is like eating the elephant. Just because you’re hungry to make progress doesn’t mean you can stomach the whole thing (or whatever the extended metaphor might be!)
3. Make commitments: it is easy to let ourselves down. It is brutal to disappoint somebody else. I don’t make promises though. I promise to try like hell. But I may fall short. We might fall short together. But we’ll know what worked and what didn’t and step back up to try again.
It makes me think about high school math teachers always asking us to Show Your Work. I never realized geometry class would translate to being a leader. But it clicked in mind in a small way this week that I did not expect.

My client had a $4,170 balance on their $4,500 credit card limit.
That's 93% utilization.
If all they did was take out a personal loan for the balance, their credit score would jump from 648 to 728.
Let's say that again for the people in the back!
An 80 point jump in credit score.
Just from tidying things up.
Oh, and they'd save $2,500 in closing costs with their new credit score for the same rate.
